Overview
The Bastion is Phantom Blade Zero’s only true shield — an Artifice Phantom Edge carved with the same beast face that Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper hides behind in the Village of Lu. Its identity is a single loop: absorb damage on the guard, then give it all back at once. If most Phantom Edges are keys wearing weapon costumes, the Bastion is both a defensive system in combat and a genuine traversal key against the repeating-crossbow traps that gate corridors throughout the game.

How to Get the Bastion
Bastion is the guaranteed drop of Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper, the story boss of the Village of Lu’s Against the Flow stretch. From the Young Master Lan’s Hideout bell, push through the ravine, barn, and riverbed to the walled arena at the village’s low end. The fight is the game’s parry exam — drain his shield bar with parries, punish the kneeling stagger — and the reward screen shows the Bastion card plus 15,000 Remnant Dust. The full moveset breakdown and cycle counts live in our Zhuo Bi boss guide; for where Bastion slots into the full collection, see the all Phantom Edges list.
How the Absorb-to-Shockwave Loop Works
Raise the Bastion and it blocks everything in front of you, but the meter is always running: holding the shield up drains Sha-Chi continuously, every blocked hit drains more, and at zero the shield shatters. While raised you can shove enemies away, creating breathing room or pushing shield-bearers off balance. The payoff is Reprisal Shockwave: release before the gauge empties and Soul slams the shield into the ground, returning every point of absorbed damage as area damage. The loop rewards patience that borders on greed — hold longer, absorb more, detonate harder — which is exactly the opposite of Phantom Blade Zero’s parry rhythm and why the Edge feels like a build choice rather than an emergency button.
The Seven Arts
Per the launch databases, Bastion fields seven arts — five from weapon levels, one field ability, and one temper:
| Art | Unlocks | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Reprisal Shockwave | Base | Release the guard before Sha-Chi depletes to slam the shield down; shockwave scales with absorbed damage |
| Bolt Ward | Field ability | Blocks bolts from repeating crossbow mechanisms, even when unequipped |
| Shield Rush | Weapon Lv 5 | After dodging, dash forward and shove enemies away |
| Immovable Wall | Weapon Lv 10/20/30 | Reduces all Sha-Chi consumption while the shield is raised (Lv 1 to 3) |
| Shield Glide | Weapon Lv 15 | Ride the shield forward in a straight line, damaging enemies and greatly depleting their Sha-Chi; costs 1 Remnant Spark |
| Swift Deployment | Weapon Lv 25 | Draw and raise the Bastion faster; stow faster after Reprisal Shockwave |
| Fierce Reprisal | Soul Temper | Reprisal Shockwave unleashes one additional shockwave |
Note what the kit is doing: Immovable Wall triples (levels 10, 20, 30) attack the Edge’s one real weakness — Sha-Chi hunger — while Swift Deployment at 25 fixes its slow feel. A level 30 Bastion is a different weapon from the level 1 drop.
Soul Tempering: Fierce Reprisal
Bastion’s temper material is the Border Banner, unearthed by slamming the Bashpole near the Young Master Lan’s Hideout Bell back in the Village of Lu. Bring the banner plus 5,000 Remnant Dust to Myst or any Bell after unlocking the system — the full route is cataloged in the Soul Temper materials index, and the economics are covered in the Soul Tempering guide. Fierce Reprisal adds a second shockwave to the slam, roughly doubling the return on a well-fed guard. Tempering is irreversible, so commit to the shield playstyle first.
What the Bastion Opens: A Path-Opening Survey
Phantom Blade Zero gates its map behind Phantom Edge “keys,” and the Bastion owns one gate type outright:
- Crossbow corridors. Repeating-crossbow mechanisms guard loot rooms and shortcuts in multiple regions. Bolt Ward neutralizes them passively, even with the Bastion stowed — you only need to have earned it once. This is the Bastion’s true traversal value, and it never expires.
- Shielded enemies and Sha-Chi pressure. Shield Glide rides through lines of shield-bearers while heavily depleting their Sha-Chi, and the shove breaks formations that stonewall blade strings.
- The rest of the keyring. Iron chains answer to the Dread Axe, weakened planks to the Bashpole, stone walls to the Tiger Cannon, and out-of-reach objects to the Feather Bow from Purge the Sect. The Bastion is the defensive half of that toolkit — the only key that also keeps you alive while you use it.
For how the community ranks the whole keyring, the best Phantom Edges tier list weighs traversal value against raw damage.
Verdict
The Bastion will never top a damage ranking, and it is not trying to. It is the game’s clearest specialist Edge: a shield with a refund policy, a passive that quietly unlocks crossbow-guarded paths for the rest of the playthrough, and a temper that turns a good slam into a great one. If you block more than you parry, it earns its slot on combat merit alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Bastion work on bosses?
Yes — raise it during a boss’s sustained string, absorb the sequence, and cash out with Reprisal Shockwave during the recovery. It trades Sha-Chi for safety, which is the right trade against enemies whose parry timings you have not learned yet.
What happens when the Bastion’s Sha-Chi runs out?
The shield shatters. You keep the Edge, but the guard drops immediately, so watch the gauge and release early rather than greed one more hit.
Is Bolt Ward really passive?
Yes. Per the in-game art text, Bastion blocks bolts from repeating crossbow mechanisms even when it is not equipped — earning it once permanently opens those corridors.
