Overview
The Baishan Stormswords are the elemental gauge weapon of Phantom Blade Zero’s dual-wield class — a matched pair once wielded by Bi Taotao, Master of the Baishan Sect, and now carried by the sect’s surviving puppet. Where the Fiend Saws stack one effect through volume of hits, the Stormswords ask you to manage two gauges at once and pay out a timed buff window.

How to Get Them
Reaching Yubi is a two-key affair. First, defeat Gu Wanyue in Pangzhen and search the area beneath the well in the Village of Lu for the key that opens the Mandate Encampment gate (Polygon’s Crimson Manor guide). Inside the region — mapped in our Mandate Encampment guide — collect the Training Grounds Key and push to the large pavilion at the northern end of the map.
Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet, guards it. GameSpot describes her as harnessing wind and lightning — fitting, given the loot — and the fight is part of the Illusory Pipa parts questline, so the story pushes you here regardless. The victory screen is generous:
- Baishan Stormswords (this weapon)
- Illusory Pipa Backplate — one of three repair components
- Several Memory Flowers
- A portal behind the pavilion that opens the second eye of the Three-Eyed Puppet in The Herald’s Illusion quest
One correction to early-launch chatter: there is a single Yubi encounter at the Training Grounds, and it drops the Stormswords once. Claims of a second drop chance are not supported by GameSpot, Polygon, or Beebom — treat any “second fight” route as community mapping in progress.
The Yubi Fight, Briefly
GameSpot calls Yubi “a truly tenacious foe” who harnesses wind and lightning — she fights like the weapon she drops, mixing fast dual-blade strings with elemental pressure. Two grounded notes: she is a puppet, and Keengamer confirms Puppets are normally immune to Bleed unless you carry the Livingwood Talisman from the Village of Lu, so Bleed builds underperform here — a parry-and-punish plan with a high Guard Break weapon is the reliable route. Rest at the Road to the Training Grounds bell (the pin’s nearest bell, per allthings.how) before crossing into the arena so retries stay short. Her exact attack timings are community mapping in progress.
The Two-Gauge Mechanic
The Stormswords run three linked perks:
- Wind Sword — normal combos build the wind gauge.
- Thunder Sword — Sha-Chi combos build the thunder gauge.
- Baishan’s Blessing — with both gauges full and both perks active, you gain a 20-second attack increase; the Wind and Thunder Sword effects end when it expires.
The decision point is Lightning Storm: trigger it during Baishan’s Blessing for a powerful burst that ends Wind and Thunder Sword early. That makes the weapon a rhythm exercise — build wind with normals, build thunder with Sha-Chi spending, cash out with Lightning Storm when the boss’s guard breaks, then rebuild. The Power Surge, Baishan Wind-Thunder Slash, is a multi-hit flurry imbued with both elements.
Note the stat line: the second stat is Status Effects (142 at level 1), not Guard Break — these swords lean on elemental pressure, so shielded enemies are a matchup problem. Weapon-level traits unlock at 5 (Centered Breath), 10/20/30 (Elemental Confluence), 15 (Wind Infusion), and 25 (Baishan’s Divine Favor); exact trait numbers are community mapping in progress.
Stormswords or Thunder Spear?
Players chasing lightning damage usually weigh these against the Thunder Spear, a Martial-type Phantom Edge from Chang Hong in Pangzhen whose combos call down lightning strikes and paralysis. The honest answer is that they do not compete: the Spear sits in a Phantom Edge slot, the Stormswords in a main slot, and a lightning build runs both. The real trade-off is responsiveness — the Thunder Spear paralyzes on demand, while the Stormswords need both gauges filled before the Blessing window opens. If you want lightning without setup, take the Spear; if you want a 20-second damage engine, take the swords. See the best Phantom Edges list for the Spear’s competition.
Verdict
A-tier dual blades with a distinct identity: sustained elemental pressure and a planned burst window rather than raw speed. Unmissable through the Illusory Pipa quest, so the only real question is whether the two-gauge rhythm suits you. Compare against the rest of the class on the full weapons list, and check upgrade costs in the Soul Tempering guide — the Stormswords’ temper material is the Baishan Headband.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Yubi optional? No — her fight is required for the Illusory Pipa repair, which itself gates the Mountain of Imprisonment route.
Do the Stormswords scale with Status Effects? Yes; pbz.gg’s level table lists 142 Status Effects at level 1 scaling to 978 at 60, alongside damage.
What is the Soul Temper upgrade? The Baishan Headband tempers the Stormswords; the tempered effect’s exact numbers are community mapping in progress.
