Do I need New Game+ for the true ending?
Phantom Blade Zero’s true ending — called the Perfect Ending or Final Battle route — is not chosen from a menu. It is earned through a campaign-long checklist of side content, and the game only tells you whether you passed at the very end. Miss one link and you get the regular ending with no trophy. This guide is the full, checkable list: every requirement, where it lives, and the exact window in which it must be done. For a spoiler-light look at how all the endings work structurally, see the all endings overview; this page is the hands-on companion.
The Timing Window: Before the Mirage Estate
Everything below must be finished before you pass the point of no return at the Mirage Estate. The chain works like this:
- After the Pangzhen main mission, you are directed to the Mirage Estate, but the thoroughfare is blocked.
- The quest becomes The Four Serpent Houses — collect the serpent items and open the hidden passage behind the snake door in the Green Serpent House.
- Opening that door is the cutoff. If requirements are incomplete, the game explicitly warns you about “unfinished business.” Heed it: you can still fast travel back out after entering, but letting requirements fail kills the route.
- A second warning comes from Inanis at the final Bell before Mount Soulrend’s peak. If she says there is nothing more she can do to prepare you, the checklist is complete.
You also still have work inside the Mirage Estate — the fifth Long Pillar and Quick Hand Zhang’s last hideout are both in there — so do not sprint to the exit.
Checklist 1: All Purple-Icon Side Quests
The golden rule from multiple launch guides: complete every story quest in the journal marked with a purple icon. These are the quests that continue across regions, and they form the true ending’s spine:
- Whence the Weeping and Deep in the Valley (Weeping Creek Valley)
- Crimson Manor and The Herald’s Illusion — the Crimson Manor walkthrough covers both
- Illusory Pipa — collect the three parts and repair the Phantom Edge with Myst in Pangzhen (parts locations)
- Sha-Chi Powered Boat and Pillars of Kunlun
- Allure of Vanity
- Secrets at the Heart of the Lake — the master quest; started by finding Firefly’s Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu and finished by ending the ritual in the hidden realm
If any purple entry sits open in your journal when the Green Serpent House door opens, go back.
Checklist 2: The Four Acolyte Masks
Four scarecrows across the world each warp you to an Acolyte boss. Defeat all four for their masks:
- Yanru’s mask — Village of Lu
- Leiting’s mask — Pangzhen (reach her with the Flaming Mane Phantom Edge: burn the barrier near the Pond of Fading Song Bell)
- Guhe’s Venom Mask — east village dock island, Meigu Lake
- Hansui’s Frost Mask — Crimson Manor, from the Puppet Scavenger duo fight (route here)
With all four, sail to the frozen northwest of Meigu Lake, dock at the snowy shore, and shatter the Four Guardians’ Mirror to enter the hidden realm. Fight through it and defeat the Blizzard Blademaster at the end.
Checklist 3: Both Crystal Puppet Eyes
- Crystal Puppet Eye (Yin) — reward for clearing the Mountain of Imprisonment, the mist-gated region north of Meigu Lake that includes the Iron Butcher. The repaired Illusory Pipa dispels the mist; the full chain is in the Six Paths Warrant walkthrough.
- Crystal Puppet Eye (Yang) — drops from the Puppet Scavenger at the bottom of the Crimson Manor.
After the Blizzard Blademaster falls in the mirror realm, a puppet statue appears. Insert both eyes to be transported to the Heart of the Lake, kill the cultists to stop the ritual, and complete Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. The Crystal Puppet Eyes page tracks both items.
Checklist 4: All Five Long Pillars
The Bloodline Awakening quest runs through five Long Pillar challenges against the Gold-Masked One:
- Weeping Creek Valley — grab the key atop the Sha-Chi Tower with the Hunt’s Scythes.
- Crimson Forest — just off the main path near the Mirrorwood entrance.
- East Meigu Lake — on an island.
- The mirror realm — inside the Four Guardians’ Mirror area; do it while you are there for the masks and eyes.
- Mirage Estate — near the Willow Pavilion; backtrack a little and grapple up with the Hunt’s Scythes.
Later pillars also pay out Soul Tempering materials for some of the game’s strongest weapons, so this chain is worth doing even for pure power.
Checklist 5: Quick Hand Zhang’s Relics
Complete every Quick Hand’s Request. The thief appears in five regions and asks for three relics from green-glowing chests each time; the quest log marks the chain complete when the last request is done. Locations are all in our Quick Hand Zhang treasures guide. Two Phantom Edges — Flying Dagger and Goldblaze — are locked behind this chain, and the final request sits inside the Mirage Estate.
The Finale and Rewards
With everything done, proceed through the Mirage Estate, use the Tiger Cannon Phantom Edge to blast into Soulrend Cliff, and listen to Inanis at the last Bell. Defeat the final boss — and instead of rolling credits, the true ending adds an exclusive extra encounter the regular route never shows. Winning it awards the Gold trophy With Heart and Blood, plus bonus outfits and items (guides report the Hunt, Kindred, and Blizzard outfits and the Radiant Heart story item). New Game+ unlocks afterward, carrying over your weapons and Phantom Edges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still get the true ending if I already entered the Mirage Estate? Yes, as long as you have not let the requirements fail — you can fast travel back out and finish the checklist. But once a requirement is marked failed, that run is locked to the regular ending.
Which of these are also missable trophies? Secrets at the Heart of the Lake (Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake) and the true ending itself (With Heart and Blood) are both on the missables list — see the missable side quests checklist.
Does difficulty affect the ending? No. Ending requirements are quest- and item-based; play on whatever tier you enjoy.
