Soul Tempering Explained - Weapon Upgrades & Materials
How Soul Tempering works in Phantom Blade Zero: where to unlock it, how Remnant Dust costs scale, and which tempering materials matter most.
FAQ
Where do you unlock Soul Tempering in Phantom Blade Zero?
What do you need for Soul Tempering?
Is Soul Tempering worth it for early weapons?

Phantom Blade Zero’s weapons are not disposable stat sticks. Every weapon and Phantom Edge has a second life: a hidden tempering material somewhere in the world that, combined with Remnant Dust, unlocks a unique ability that often redefines the weapon. The system is called Soul Tempering.
How to Unlock Soul Tempering
Soul Tempering opens up in Pangzhen, one of the game’s central regions:
- Reach Pangzhen — the story routes you there after the bridge collapse sends you the long way through Crimson Forest.
- Visit the tavern and meet Myst, who handles tempering services.
- From then on, any Bell can serve as a tempering station while exploring.
The system is available remarkably early, which is the point: S-GAME wants you hunting materials alongside the main path.
What Tempering Costs
Every temper is a two-part recipe:
- The tempering material — one specific hidden item per weapon, found through exploration, bosses, or quest chains. Examples verified at launch:
- Jagged Steel + Iron Butcher Mask (from the Iron Butcher boss) → Open Wounds: Bleed Gauge keeps filling even on blocked enemies.
- Outlaw Warblade + Six Paths Warrant (see the walkthrough) → Ruthless Outlaw: damage scales with your recoverable HP.
- Hunter’s Chain Sickle + Alloyed Scythe Blade (from the Puppet Scavenger — see the Puppet Tongue Key chain) → Gleaming Hook: adds Bleed build-up to grapple attacks.
- Remnant Dust — the upgrade currency spent on top. Confirmed costs so far run into the thousands (the Outlaw Warblade temper costs 5,000), so treat Dust as a resource worth banking, not burning on consumables.
Why Tempered Abilities Change Builds
The defining trait of tempering is that the unlocks are mechanics, not numbers:
- Open Wounds removes blocking as a defense against your Bleed build — enemies that turtle still die.
- Gleaming Hook turns a traversal tool into a combat engine, enabling the endgame Bleed package (Jagged Steel + Chain Sickle + Livingwood Talisman).
- Ruthless Outlaw rewards high-risk, low-health play with scaling damage.
A tempered mid-tier weapon routinely outperforms an untempered top-tier one, which flips the usual “equip the biggest number” instinct. Check every weapon’s temper before benching it.
Material Hunting Tips
- Mist barriers hide materials. Several tempering items sit behind mist doorways that only the repaired Illusory Pipa opens. The repair chain starts with three boss-held parts — see the Six Paths Warrant guide.
- Quest chains pay in materials. The Quick Hand Zhang treasure hunt pays out Phantom Edges and accessories across five regions; similar chains gate other materials.
- Hidden areas matter. The Crimson Manor beneath Weeping Creek Valley’s Sha-Chi tower (explosive-cracked wall, elevator, Puppet Tongue Key door) is the kind of detour that pays a tempering material — documented in the Puppet Tongue Key walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you temper Phantom Edges? Yes — the Hunter’s Chain Sickle is a Phantom Edge with a confirmed temper (Gleaming Hook), so treat Edges as upgradeable, not consumable tools.
Is Remnant Dust farmable? Dust comes from enemies, chests, and quest rewards throughout the eight regions. Early confirmed single-temper costs (5,000 for the Outlaw Warblade) suggest banking Dust from hour one.
What happens if I miss a tempering material? Nothing permanent — materials stay in the world once their area is accessible, and revisiting old regions with new tools (Chain Sickle, Illusory Pipa) opens the routes that hide them.
