The Iron Butcher, the Frenzied Brute of the Mountain of Imprisonment

Who Is the Iron Butcher?

The Iron Butcher is a second Maskwalker: the Frenzied Brute — the same boss family as Maskwalker Jagged Steel from Weeping Creek Valley, fought again inside the Mountain of Imprisonment. By this point in the game the moveset should feel familiar, which is exactly why S-GAME gates valuable upgrade material behind it: the fight tests consistency, not discovery.

How to Reach the Mountain of Imprisonment

The Iron Butcher is hidden behind one of Phantom Blade Zero’s mist barriers, so the fight has prerequisites:

  1. Restore the Illusory Pipa. Its three parts are held by a hidden boss in the Village of Lu, a chapter boss at Mandate’s Encampment, and a hidden boss in the Ruined Theater at Meigu Lake.
  2. Bring the parts to Myst at the Pangzhen tavern to repair it. The repaired Pipa becomes a Phantom Edge (used with R2) that clears mist-shrouded doorways.
  3. Return to Meigu Lake and sail north. Clear the mist with the Pipa to unlock the Mountain of Imprisonment.

The full Pipa hunt is covered in our Six Paths Warrant walkthrough, which leads to the same area.

Attack Patterns and How to Respond

The Iron Butcher fights like a late-game Jagged Steel: the same Brutal/Killer structure, but longer strings and more aggressive red-flash chaining.

  • Blue-flash overhead and sweep combos — parry each hit. The full string is five to six swings at higher difficulty; each successful parry builds Sha-Chi and staggers pressure.
  • Red-flash charge attacks — Ghoststep through the charge, then punish the recovery. The charge tracks, so Ghoststep through him rather than away.
  • Enrage at low health — expect faster string startups and a new double red-flash finisher. Save your Phantom Edge specials for this stretch.

Strategy

If you beat the first Maskwalker by reacting to color flashes, this fight is execution repetition. The one new demand is stamina discipline over a longer fight: the Iron Butcher has enough health that early greed gets punished eventually. Play the first half as a pure parry drill, build a big Sha-Chi lead, then spend it on heavy attacks and Phantom Edge specials in the second half.

Phantom Edges shine here. The Hunter’s Chain Sickle grapple attack creates safe windows after his red-flash charges, and any damage-boosting Edge accelerates the enrage transition — shorter enrage, fewer chances to get caught by the double red finisher.

Rewards

  • Iron Butcher Mask — the Soul Tempering material for the Jagged Steel.
  • A new Bell, Iron Butcher’s Camp, for fast travel back.
  • Progress toward the Perfect Ending, since the Mountain of Imprisonment is on that route.

What the Mask Unlocks: Open Wounds

Tempering the Jagged Steel with the mask at any Bell grants Open Wounds: the sword keeps filling the enemy Bleed Gauge even when they block. Blocking stops being a safe option for anything that bleeds — except Puppets, Golden Bodies, and Phantom Bodies, which are immune. Combine with the Livingwood Talisman to cover that gap, and with the Hunter’s Chain Sickle for a full Bleed build. See the Soul Tempering guide for costs and mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to the Iron Butcher boss? Repair the Illusory Pipa (three hidden parts across Village of Lu, Mandate’s Encampment, and Meigu Lake’s Ruined Theater), then clear the mist at the north of Meigu Lake.

What is the Iron Butcher Mask used for? It is the Soul Tempering material for the Jagged Steel, unlocking the Open Wounds ability that bleeds blocking enemies.
