Who Is Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden?

Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden, is one of the most important hidden bosses in Phantom Blade Zero. A woman who wanders before a ruined songhouse playing her zither day and night, she is easy to miss entirely — and skipping her locks you out of the Illusory Pipa, one of the most consequential items in the game. This guide covers exactly where to find Yan Qiansui, how to unlock her arena, how her unusual fight works, and why her reward matters for the true ending.

Where Is the Ruined Songhouse?

Yan Qiansui is fought in the ruined songhouse (Meigu Songhouse) on Songhouse Island, in the southern part of Meigu Lake — sometimes described as a sunken opera house. Getting there is a multi-step unlock:

  1. Progress Pangzhen’s main story until you defeat the Lion Dance Grandmaster in the city’s northwestern corner, then visit the marked NPC to activate Flaming Mane’s vine-burning function.
  2. Burn the brambles near the Pavilion of Knowledge to open the route from north Pangzhen down to Meigu Lake.
  3. Sail to Songhouse Island and dock at the Meigu Songhouse Dock Bell.

If you are earlier in the game and still working through the opening region, our beginner guide will get you to Pangzhen faster. Note that the lake route only opens after the Pangzhen region boss falls — if the brambles will not burn, you have not finished that step yet.

How Do You Unlock the Yan Qiansui Fight?

The songhouse arena does not open on arrival. You must collect Yan’er’s Memory Flowers floating around the island — including two toward the Pangzhen docks — to gain access. Sweep the shoreline and the shallows before ringing at the arena; missing even one flower leaves the fight sealed. This is the step most players miss when they cannot find Yan Qiansui at all, so if the door will not open, the answer is almost always an uncollected flower near the docks. The flowers glow faintly and are easiest to spot from the water, so circle the island by boat before you give up and assume the fight is bugged.

How Does the Yan Qiansui Fight Work?

Like other musician-type enemies in the game, Yan Qiansui fights at range with sonic projectiles, and she cannot be damaged until her guard meter is depleted:

  • Blue orbs — parry them. Reflecting her blue sonic blades back at her drains her Sha-Chi gauge. This is the entire engine of the fight: stand your ground, parry on the flash, and let her own music break her guard.
  • Red orbs — avoid them. Red projectiles cannot be reflected safely; Ghoststep or sidestep. Big white orbs are also dodge-only, and red melee attacks often come in right after a volley of colored orbs dissipates.
  • The screech QTE. Periodically Yan Qiansui screeches, triggering a quick-time event. Mash the prompt to sidestep an incoming area-of-effect bombardment — failing it eats a huge chunk of health.
  • Punish the break. Once her guard shatters, close in fast and unload your strongest combo before she recovers. Repeat the reflect cycle until she falls.

If you have been following the fundamentals in our combat system guide, her parry timings will feel familiar — the discipline is resisting the urge to rush her between volleys. A tempered main weapon shortens each break window considerably, so it is worth a detour through our Soul Tempering guide first.

What Rewards Does Yan Qiansui Drop?

Beating Yan Qiansui pays out two major items:

  • Illusory Pipa Strings — the third component of the Illusory Pipa. The Head drops from Dusk, the Puppeteer (a hidden boss in the Village of Lu), and the Backplate comes from the Mandate Encampment. Take all three to Myst in Pangzhen to repair the Pipa.
  • Fanatic’s Fragment: Attachment — combined with its pair, it forms the Fanatic’s Obsession, a Soul Tempering material for the Fanatic’s Broken Blade.

She is also tied to the quest Allure of Vanity, and defeating her counts toward the Master of the Misty Waters trophy for clearing every powerful foe around Meigu Lake.

Why Does Yan Qiansui Matter for the True Ending?

The repaired Illusory Pipa is an artifice-type Phantom Edge that dispels mist-shrouded barriers all over the map. Two of those barriers sit right at the Meigu Songhouse Dock arena — behind one lies the Six Paths Warrant, the material that tempers the Outlaw Warblade into the Ruthless Outlaw, whose damage scales with your recoverable HP. More importantly, the Pipa unseals the special barrier in northern Meigu Lake, a route woven into the game’s deeper endings — see our all endings guide for how the Pipa chain connects. In short: no Yan Qiansui, no Pipa, no true ending route. Check the all bosses list for the other hidden fights you will want cleared on the same save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Yan Qiansui optional? Technically yes — she is a hidden boss — but her Illusory Pipa Strings are required to repair the Pipa, which gates mist-shrouded areas and the true ending route. Treat her as mandatory on any completionist run.

What level should I be for Yan Qiansui? Community mapping puts her around enemy level 19, in line with the rest of Meigu Lake’s powerful foes. If the orbs are shredding you, finish more of Pangzhen first.

Can you refight Yan Qiansui? Rematch availability is still being mapped by the community; assume the fight is one-and-done per playthrough for now, and grab every nearby collectible before you leave the island.
