Who Is Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper?
Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper (守门人拙壁) is the armored wall standing between you and the heart of the Village of Lu — and, functionally, Phantom Blade Zero’s parry instructor. His Archive entry types him as a Perfect Transcension: a gatekeeper under Wu Xuan clad in heavy armor, a single blood-red eye behind his helmet, carrying a massive shield carved with a fearsome beast’s face. The lore is pure tragedy — a lifelong soldier who obeyed every order, including the one to undergo Transcension, until nothing remained but the duty to guard. One spelling note before anything else: his name bar reads Zhuo Bi, confirmed by wikily and pbz.gg; the “Zhou Bi” spelling floating around one IGN memory-flowers guide is a typo.
Where to Find Him
Zhuo Bi waits in a walled arena at the low end of the Village of Lu, during the early Against the Flow story stretch. From Old Man Gen’s hideout, follow the road toward the village proper and he spawns right across the stone bridge. The smarter approach, per TheGamer, is to detour left to Young Master Lan’s Hideout first and rest at its bell — it sits closer to the arena than Gen’s bell, so death runs are short. From Lan’s camp, take the stone steps into the ravine, pass the barn, cross the Vessel pit and riverbed, and climb the rope ladder to the blue-lanterned gate. The full region route is mapped in our Village of Lu walkthrough.
The Shield Bar: How the Fight Actually Works
Zhuo Bi fields roughly 41,800 HP on Pathbreaker, but you will barely scratch it while his guard holds — a separate shield bar sits above his health, and direct hits on the demon-face shield do almost nothing. The loop is strict:
- Parry his attacks. Every successful parry drains the shield bar. This is why the fight is a teaching moment: the blue-flash parry timings from the combat system guide are the entire strategy.
- Break the guard. When the bar empties, Zhuo Bi drops to one knee for roughly 10–15 seconds of stagger. TheGamer notes a mount prompt lets you stab his eye once per cycle — plan on about four cycles for the kill.
- Punish hard, then reset. The bar refills automatically after the stagger, so dump your biggest strings and Phantom Edge bursts into each window.
Do not waste Sha-Chi swinging into the raised shield between windows; patience is the fight.
Moveset and How to Answer It
Sportskeeda and AllThingsHow’s frame-by-frame write-ups agree on the kit:
- Shield slam combo — multiple slams ending in a blue-flash finisher. Parry everything, especially the opener of each string; it is your bread and butter for draining the bar.
- Shield slide — a black-flash move where he mounts the shield and slides at you, up to three times. Dodge sideways; it hits hard on impact.
- Red-flash combos and dive attack — shield strings ending in a red-flash slam, plus an airborne crash that lands near you. Perfect dodge both; do not try to parry red.
- Rock spikes — he plants the shield into the ground and spikes erupt in front. Sidestep the line immediately.
- Shockwave — he lunges back and sets the shield down, sending a frontal shockwave. Move to the side on sight.
Almost everything else in his kit is parryable, which is what makes him manageable despite the health pool. His gallery description holds true in practice: slow and heavy, he never attempts to dodge, so every punish window you earn lands in full. Watch for the pit before the arena too — AllThingsHow notes the Vessels waiting below the walkway on the approach can chip you before the fight even starts, so deal with them first rather than dragging them through the gate.
Faster Shield Breaks: Phantom Edges and Talismans
If cycles feel slow, lean on gear with high Shield-Breaking Power. Sportskeeda and TheGamer both recommend the Iron Gauntlets and the Dread Axe Phantom Edges — pop them during gaps in his strings to chew the shield bar directly — and the Shieldbreaker Talisman artifact to amplify damage against guards. A tempered weapon shortens every punish window too; the Soul Tempering guide covers the economics if you are pre-farming.
Rewards: The Bastion Phantom Edge
The payout is one of the better early defensive tools in the game:
- Bastion — an Artifice-type Phantom Edge (AllThingsHow lists it at Damage 226 / Guard Break 198) that raises a guard to block incoming damage, with seven arts including Reprisal Shockwave. Crucially, it also works as an exploration ability that blocks crossbow bolts, which pays off throughout the village and beyond. It slots into the wider collection tracked in our all Phantom Edges guide.
- 15,000 Remnant Dust — a healthy early injection for leveling; see the Remnant Dust farming guide if you are banking for upgrades.
There is also a Blackstone Shard in a chest beside the boss gate — grab it before you leave the arena.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zhuo Bi a main or optional boss? He sits on the main path through the Village of Lu, so treat him as required — but you can temporarily bypass him via Young Master Lan’s Hideout and return stronger.
Why do my attacks do zero damage? You are hitting the raised shield. Wait for his attacks, parry them to drain the shield bar, and only commit to damage during the kneeling stagger.
What is the fastest way to beat Zhuo Bi? Parry every opener, break the guard, then unload with your heaviest string plus a shield-breaking Phantom Edge. Four clean cycles is the usual clear, per TheGamer.
