Wild Oriole Sword Guide - Dock Pickup, Not a Boss Drop

How to get the Wild Oriole Sword in Phantom Blade Zero: it is a manual dock pickup after Mu Xiaokui's extended fight, not an automatic drop - grab it before leaving.

FAQ

How do you get the Wild Oriole Sword in Phantom Blade Zero?
Collect all five of Mu Xiaokui's ribbons in the Village of Lu to unlock the extended boss encounter, defeat all three phases, then walk forward onto the dock and pick the sword up manually. It is a world pickup, not an automatic reward.
Is the Wild Oriole Sword a drop from Mu Xiaokui?
No. Beating the fight alone does not put it in your inventory - the sword lies on the dock past the arena, and you must interact with it before leaving the area.
Is the Wild Oriole Sword missable?
Yes, twice over. Skip any of the five ribbons and the extended fight never happens; beat the fight but leave without looting the dock and the broken elevator stops you from returning.
What does Oriole Song do?
Press Block and Heavy Attack together to spend Sha-Chi and enter the Oriole Song state for 10 seconds. While active, every heavy attack launches an air-rending blade wave that hits at mid-range.

The Wild Oriole Sword, Mu Xiaokui’s one-handed blade, found on the dock after her extended fight

Overview

The Wild Oriole Sword is the weapon launch players most often earned and still lost. It is a one-handed sword tied to the Mu Xiaokui encounter at the end of the Village of Lu, ranked A tier on Keengamer’s launch tier list for its blade waves and mid-range pressure — and it is surrounded by one persistent misunderstanding this guide exists to correct.

Property Detail
Type One-handed main weapon
Source Dock pickup after the extended Mu Xiaokui fight (Village of Lu)
Starting stats 295 Damage / 104 Guard Break (level 1, per pbz.gg)
Signature Oriole Song — 10s state, heavy attacks fire blade waves
Power Surge Wild Oriole Sword Art — unblockable flurry
Availability MISSABLE — ribbons gate the fight, the elevator gates the pickup

The Correction: It Is a Pickup, Not a Drop

GameSpot’s all-weapons guide lists the Wild Oriole Sword as a reward of the Mu Xiaokui encounter alongside the Fiend Saws, and many players reasonably assume both weapons land in the inventory when the boss falls. They do not. The Fiend Saws are the fight’s reward; the Wild Oriole Sword is a physical item lying on the dock ahead of the arena, and you must walk over and interact with it.

Fextralife’s wiki entry spells out the failure case: the sword is “located ahead on the dock after defeating Mu Xiaokui,” and you must collect it before leaving the area — the elevator back into the arena breaks once you go. So the full miss condition has two stages:

  1. No ribbons, no fight. You still need all five ribbons from the Young Mistress side quest to trigger the extended three-phase encounter; the dock pickup only exists after that version of the fight.
  2. Fight won, sword forgotten. Clear the arena, ride the elevator out without looting the dock, and the sword is gone until NG+.

The safety habit: the moment the fight ends, do not touch the elevator. Walk the dock first.

Oriole Song, Broken Down

The sword’s identity is Oriole Song. Press Block + Heavy Attack to spend Sha-Chi and enter a 10-second state where every heavy attack releases an air-rending blade wave — a projectile slash that extends the one-handed sword’s reach into mid-range. Ten seconds is short, so the mechanic rewards preparation: close the distance first, pop Oriole Song when the enemy commits to an approach or a long recovery, and spend the whole window on heavies rather than mixing in light strings.

The upgrade track turns those waves into a mark engine:

  • Oriole Mark (level 5): blade waves apply a 5-second mark — marked enemies take increased damage and increased Sha-Chi depletion, and cannot be re-marked until 6 seconds after it expires.
  • Potent Mark (level 10): raises the mark’s damage and Sha-Chi depletion.
  • Bursting Mark (level 15): guard-breaking a marked enemy triggers an extra burst of blade energy.
  • Lingering Mark (level 25): extends the mark to 10 seconds and shortens the re-mark cooldown to 3 seconds.

The Wild Oriole Sword Art Power Surge spends 1 Sha-Chi Essence on an unblockable flurry of strikes — the straightforward punish for a guard-broken boss, and it pairs naturally with Bursting Mark’s eruption.

Soul Tempering: Tianmiao Wild Oriole

Once Myst unlocks Soul Tempering in Pangzhen, the sword’s material is the Supreme Order Token, obtained from Mu Xiaokui and her bodyguards at the Sha-Chi Tower roof (GameSpot’s Soul Temper guide). Tempering transforms it into Tianmiao Wild Oriole: Mu Tianmiao’s sword fights alongside yours during Sha-Chi combos for dual-blade attacks, and Oriole Song’s blade waves hit harder. See the Soul Tempering guide for the system basics.

Pairing and Combat Notes

Oriole Song changes the sword’s effective range, so treat the ten seconds as a stance rather than a buff: activate it just outside an enemy’s reach, then spend the window walking heavies into them while the waves do the trading. Because every wave applies Oriole Mark once unlocked, even blocked waves advance your damage-amp setup — a rare property for a one-handed weapon, and the reason the sword pressures turtling enemies better than its stat line suggests. It pairs best with a high Guard Break partner in the second weapon slot: break the guard with the heavy weapon, swap, and let Bursting Mark detonate on the opening. Against parry-heavy bosses the waves also give you a safe punish from mid-range while you wait for a readable string — the opposite philosophy to the Tianxuan Bronze Sword’s guard-focused Natural Order.

Verdict

Among one-handed swords, the Wild Oriole Sword is the aggressive mid-range option — A tier rather than S, but with a niche nothing else in the class fills: safe, repeated wave pressure that builds a damage-amp mark while you stay out of trading range. It is strictly worth the thirty seconds the dock pickup costs. For alternatives, check the best early-game weapons and the full weapons list; the boss herself is covered in all bosses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the five ribbons for the Wild Oriole Sword specifically? Yes — the dock pickup is part of the extended encounter’s rewards. The ribbons are covered step by step in the Village of Lu walkthrough.

Can I come back for the sword later in the same run? No. The elevator out of the arena breaks once you leave, which is exactly why the pickup is missable.

Is the Wild Oriole Sword better than the Fiend Saws? Different roles — the sword is a measured one-handed wave weapon, the saws are a burst dual-wield. Take both; they come from the same evening’s work.
