Secrets at the Heart of the Lake is the umbrella quest of Phantom Blade Zero’s true ending — the chain that ties together collectibles, four hidden minibosses, two optional regions, and a mirror realm before culminating in the ritual beneath Meigu Lake. Two of the game’s three endings depend on it. To keep the division of labor clean: individual Memory Flower locations live in the Memory Flowers guide, the canyon boss has his own Dusk the Puppeteer page, the eye hunt is detailed in the Crystal Puppet Eyes guide, and the mirror-realm pillar trial is in Bloodline Awakening. This page connects the whole arc in order, spoiler-gated step by step.
Step 1: Six Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu
The quest opens the moment you examine a Firefly’s Memory Flower in the Village of Lu. Six flowers are scattered around the village — past Gatekeeper Zhuo Bi’s bridge in the blue-lantern yard, under the bridge to the Well of the Three Puppets, inside the blue-lantern house at the Temple of the Blue Fireflies, down from the Covered Bridge bell, on the cliff below the house across the Covered Bridge, and through the floor gap at the Engine Giant Remains. Collecting all six clears the mist at the Broken Puppet Pit Entrance bell — the pit behind the Temple of the Blue Fireflies that drops into the canyon below.
Step 2: Dusk’s Refuge — Dusk the Puppeteer
Descend through the unsealed rear gate of the Temple of the Blue Fireflies and fight through Dusk’s Refuge to find Dusk deep in the canyon. The duel against Dusk, the Puppeteer is a genuine boss fight — treat his puppet strings like area hazards and punish the recovery windows. Victory earns the Puppeteer’s Bell Phantom Edge, whose durable summoned puppets can hold enemy aggro; it is an A-tier summoning tool on our best Phantom Edges ranking. After the fight, Dusk burns his own life to reveal seven old illusionists maintaining the Rift — and the real quest begins: find a way into the Heart of the Lake.
Step 3: The Four Acolyte Masks
Puppet No. 99 — the Herald’s favorite — is sealed behind the Four Guardians’ Mirror, and the mirror only shatters for four masks. Hunt the talisman-marked scarecrows:
- Acolyte Yanru — near The Lady Grounds bell in the Village of Lu.
- Acolyte Lei Ting — Pangzhen; reach her by repairing the Flaming Mane Phantom Edge, then burning the barrier near the Pond of Fading Song bell.
- Acolyte Guhe — the White Serpent House dock on the eastern village island of Meigu Lake.
- Acolyte Hansui — inside the Crimson Manor, which is itself a multi-quest lock: fix the Illusory Pipa, complete Whence the Weeping through the Mountain of Imprisonment, and clear the Mandate Encampment’s portal. The full manor route is in the Crimson Manor walkthrough.
Step 4: The Phantom Illusionist’s Mirror Realm
With all four masks, take the Sha-Chi-powered boat to the frozen northwestern shore of Meigu Lake and ring the Four Guardians’ Mirror bell. Presenting the masks shatters the mirror and transports you into the Discordance realm — the Phantom Illusionist’s domain, and also the location of the fourth Long Pillar for Bloodline Awakening, so clear both checklists in one trip. Fight through the realm to its prison, where the Blizzard Blademaster guards the way: bring elemental resistance accessories and Green Serpent Brew, perfect-dodge his red-flash follow-ups, and punish the long recovery after his charged combos. Defeating him also earns the Whiteshadow weapon, whose Power Surge guarantees a freeze.
Step 5: The Yin-Yang Eyes and Puppet No. 99
The statue of Puppet No. 99 rises from the lake in the mirror realm, and it needs both crystal eyes:
- Crystal Puppet Eye [Yin] — from the Three-Eyed Puppet at the end of The Herald’s Illusion; its third portal lies in the depths of the Mountain of Imprisonment, which also completes Whence the Weeping. See the Herald’s Illusion walkthrough.
- Crystal Puppet Eye [Yang] — looted from the Puppet Scavenger boss inside the Crimson Manor.
Socket both eyes and a cutscene relocates you to the Heart of the Lake itself.
Step 6: Destroy the Ritual
At the bottom of the lake, the seven illusionists’ ritual is already underway. Destroy it — the confrontation with the High Elder is the quest’s final fight. Kill the puppet cultists to end the ritual, and a cutscene carries you to the Realm of Mirage, where your conversation with Inanis grants the Violet Blossom. That conversation is what the endings check for: without it, the bridge past Inanis’s warning in the Pangzhen backstreet locks the true ending out. With it — plus the five Long Pillars and Quick Hand Zhang’s requests — you are set for the Final Battle; the full checklist is in the true ending guide.
Completing the quest awards the Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake silver trophy. Do it before the Mirage Estate point of no return, alongside the other missable quests.
Efficient Order and Rewards
The chain spans four regions, so sequence it to avoid backtracking: clear the flowers and Dusk while you are already in the Village of Lu for the story, grab Yanru’s mask on the same visit, and defer Lei Ting, Guhe, and the Crimson Manor legs until Meigu Lake and Pangzhen open naturally. The mirror-realm trip should be your last major outing, since by then the Long Pillar, the eyes, and the ritual all collapse into a single expedition.
For completion, the quest pays out the Puppeteer’s Bell and Whiteshadow gear along the way, and — most importantly — the Inanis conversation and Violet Blossom that the ending check requires. It is one of the two story quests that upgrade the finale into the Final Battle, the other being Bloodline Awakening. Finish both, plus Quick Hand Zhang’s requests, before the Mirage Estate cutoff listed in the missable quests guide.
