FAQ

Where is the Crimson Manor in Phantom Blade Zero?
Beneath the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley. Complete the Deep in the Valley side quest, lure a Powderkeg enemy into exploding near the wooden ruins at the tower's base, and ride the revealed lift down to the Mute door.
How do I get the Puppet's Tongue key for the Crimson Manor?
Complete The Herald's Illusion: pass through three portals (Village of Lu's Puppet Testing Grounds, Mandate Encampment's Training Grounds, and the Mountain of Imprisonment's depths) so the Three-Eyed Puppet opens all its eyes and hands over the tongue.
What does the Puppet Scavenger drop?
The Alloyed Scythe Blade (Soul Temper material for the Hunter's Chain Sickle), the Crystal Puppet Eye (Yang) needed for the true ending, and Hansui's Frost Mask, one of the four Acolyte Masks.
When can I enter the Crimson Manor?
Late in the campaign. The third Herald's Illusion portal sits in the Mountain of Imprisonment, so the manor is effectively a late-game dungeon even though you can find its door in the first region.

The Crimson Manor is one of Phantom Blade Zero’s best-hidden dungeons: you can stand in front of its door in the opening hours, yet the key that opens it is scattered across three regions and most of the campaign. The payoff matches the effort — the manor’s boss drops a Soul Tempering material, a true-ending key item, and one of the four Acolyte Masks in a single fight. This walkthrough covers the full route: finding the Mute door, the Puppet’s Tongue key chain, what to grab inside, and the Puppet Scavenger encounter.

Finding the Manor: The Mute Door

The Crimson Manor hides below the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley, the game’s first major region. Getting to the door requires some groundwork:

  1. Complete the side quest Deep in the Valley, which opens up the lower section of the Sha-Chi Tower.
  2. At the tower’s base, find the Powderkeg enemy that keeps respawning near wooden ruins and rubble.
  3. Bait it toward the rubble, then step clear before it detonates. The explosion reveals a lift down to the depths.

At the bottom waits the manor’s puppet door — later known as Mute — and interacting with it only tells you the door is missing its tongue. Before you leave, pick up the Ancient Armor Fragment accessory near the gnarled tree in front of the manor; it grants damage reduction that scales with your current HP, up to 20% at full health.

Getting the Puppet’s Tongue Key

The key item is the Puppet’s Tongue, and it is the reward for a separate side quest: The Herald’s Illusion. You must pass through three portals leading to the hanging Three-Eyed Puppet; each portal you use opens one of its eyes, and once all three are open it speaks to you and hands over the tongue.

  • Portal 1 — Village of Lu. Descend the well in the Puppet Testing Grounds during the main quest and defeat Yuzan, No. 3 Musician Puppet. The portal sits beyond the boss arena.
  • Portal 2 — Mandate Encampment. Trek north across the battlefields to the Training Grounds and defeat Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet. Yubi also holds one of the three Illusory Pipa components, so this stop doubles as progress on the Illusory Pipa parts hunt. The portal waits just past the boss.
  • Portal 3 — Mountain of Imprisonment. This is the long pole. The mountain only opens once the repaired Illusory Pipa clears the mist at Meigu Lake — our Six Paths Warrant walkthrough covers that chain. Fight up to the summit shrine, defeat Huangxing for the Flying Guillotine Phantom Edge, then use the Guillotine to rotate the dial inside the shrine. The hidden passage leads to the mountain’s depths, a familiar face, and the final portal.

Because the third portal sits in a late-game region, treat the Crimson Manor as endgame content even though its door is in the starting valley. For the item-by-item key chain in isolation, see the dedicated Puppet Tongue Key quest page.

Inside the Crimson Manor

With the Puppet’s Tongue delivered, Mute opens. The manor itself is compact but dense:

  • The second-floor library holds a stack of readable lore fragments — worth the detour if you are piecing together the Phantom World’s backstory.
  • The library also hides Leng Tu’s Memory Flower, one of a collectible set spread across multiple regions. Grab it now; backtracking later is easy to forget.
  • Past the manor proper, a tunnel leads to a chasm. Descend by dropping from thread to thread — landing on the strings negates fall damage, and a straight drop does not.

A Crimson Manor Bell sits in the area, so you will not have to re-run the chasm if the fight at the bottom goes poorly.

Puppet Scavenger and Acolyte Hansui

The bottom of the chasm is a boss arena. The Puppet Scavenger is a slow, heavy hitter whose smashes and grab attacks hurt far more than its speed suggests — standard discipline from the combat system applies: parry the blue flashes, Ghoststep the red, and never get greedy past its strings.

The twist comes at 50% HP: Acolyte Hansui freezes the Scavenger mid-fight and turns the encounter into a sequence of two battles. Hansui casts ice spells that chill and eventually freeze Soul solid, leaving you helpless for several seconds — dodge through the casts rather than trying to parry them, and punish her recovery windows. While Hansui lives, the Scavenger stays frozen, so focus her down, then return to the Scavenger and whittle away its remaining health.

Rewards and What They Unlock

The combined encounter pays out three major items:

  • Alloyed Scythe Blade — the Soul Temper material that converts the Hunter’s Chain Sickle into its upgraded form at any Bell. See the Soul Tempering guide and the Alloyed Scythe Blade entry for the numbers.
  • Crystal Puppet Eye (Yang) — one of the two eyes required for the true ending. The Yin eye comes from the Mountain of Imprisonment; both are tracked in our Crystal Puppet Eyes guide and the true ending checklist.
  • Hansui’s Frost Mask — the fourth Acolyte Mask. With all four, you can shatter the Four Guardians’ Mirror in northwestern Meigu Lake and enter the hidden realm where the puppet eyes are used.

In other words, clearing the Crimson Manor closes out three separate endgame threads at once — weapon tempering, the ending hunt, and the Acolyte Mask quartet. If you are planning a Perfect Ending run, this dungeon is not optional; it is the keystone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to defeat Gu Wanyue before entering the Crimson Manor? Gu Wanyue gates parts of the wider Weeping Creek Valley quest web, but the manor door itself only checks for the Puppet’s Tongue. Clear the region’s bosses as you naturally progress and the chain will line up.

Can I miss the Crimson Manor permanently? No — the manor and its portals remain available until the campaign’s point of no return at the Mirage Estate, and the game warns you about unfinished business beforehand. Finish it before that warning to keep the true ending alive.

Is the Puppet Scavenger fight harder than other optional bosses? It plays like a mid-tier optional boss with a duo twist. Check the all bosses list for where it sits relative to fights like the Iron Butcher.
