Overview
The Fanatic’s Broken Blade is the strangest main weapon in Phantom Blade Zero — the game’s one and only drunken sword. Its in-game card reads: “A broken sword. Drinking awakens its power, allowing it to fly through the air and strike distant enemies. Damage falls off over distance.” Three feet of blade remain from the weapon of Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic, severed by the Order long before Soul takes it up.

How to Get It
The Fanatic’s Broken Blade comes from the boss who opens the game’s second region. Progress the story out of Weeping Creek Valley into Crimson Forest (Chapter 2, Snake’s Reflection) and you will meet Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic on a bridge deck near the Pangzhen Bridge Overlook bell. Defeat him and the weapon card appears over his body — a guaranteed drop, not a chance one. The Hua Qianxiao boss guide covers his drunken sword moveset and punish windows, and the all bosses guide shows where he sits in the overall boss order.
The Drunken Mechanic: Sober, Tipsy, Drunk
This is the deepest and strangest unique weapon system in the launch build, and it works in three states.
Bottomless Drink (L1 + Triangle) makes Soul drink, restoring Sha-Chi and entering the Tipsy state. Hold the input to restore more Sha-Chi. While Tipsy — 15 seconds by default — every Standard Combo and Sha-Chi Combo swing becomes a Flying Sword attack: the blade leaves Soul’s hand and strikes at range, with damage falling off over distance. This is the only weapon in the entire game whose basic combo converts into a projectile.
Drink Until Dawn (L2) is the Power Surge, and its effect depends on the current state:
- Sober: spend 1 Sha-Chi Essence for an unblockable Flying Sword Flurry, then enter Tipsy.
- Tipsy: spend 1 Sha-Chi Essence to enter Drunk for 20 seconds.
- Drunk: unleash an unblockable Empowered Flying Sword Flurry for free, then return to Sober.
Drunk is the payoff state: Soul’s mobility is heavily restricted and he cannot block with L1, but he automatically dodges incoming attacks and his Flying Sword damage rises substantially. The director described the fantasy before launch as Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master pushed into kung fu punk — deliberately not realistic, with Soul floating through swings and dodging “in the illusion.” A separate Drunken Counter (unlocked at weapon level 15) is a timed input just before a blockable hit lands: Soul evades, takes a drink, and counterattacks.
Trait Tree
| Level | Trait | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Boundless Thirst | More Sha-Chi restored by Drink, faster drinking |
| 10 | Drunken Clarity Lv. 1 | Tipsy lasts +5 seconds |
| 15 | Drunken Counter | Timed evade-drink-counter while Drunk |
| 20 | Drunken Clarity Lv. 2 | Tipsy lasts +10 seconds |
| 25 | A Strong Drink | Greatly increased Attack while Tipsy or Drunk |
| 30 | Drunken Clarity Lv. 3 | Tipsy lasts +15 seconds |
Drunken Clarity stacking is the build-defining line: fully leveled, the Tipsy window stretches from 15 seconds to 45, which is most of a boss phase. Combined with Boundless Thirst’s faster drinking, a maxed Broken Blade spends nearly the whole fight in its empowered states instead of rationing them.
Soul Tempering: The Fanatic’s Drunken Sword
Through Soul Tempering, the blade consumes 5,000 Remnant Dust and one Fanatic’s Obsession to become The Fanatic’s Drunken Sword — Hua Qianxiao’s broken blade fully reforged. The tempered form removes the weapon’s core drawback: Flying Sword damage no longer falls off over distance, so the ranged drunken combo hits at full strength from any spacing.
Verdict
Community tier lists are honest about this one: keengamer ranks the Fanatic’s Broken Blade in B tier — powerful, but it “needs drinking windows and more setup” compared to the self-sufficient S-tier picks like Jagged Steel. That undersells the fun. Nothing else in the game lets you zone a boss with flying swords while auto-dodging in a drunken stagger, and the tempered form is a genuine ranged build core. If you enjoy setup-payoff weapons, it is a highlight of the arsenal; if you want simplicity, the best early-game weapons are safer picks. Pair it with Phantom Edges that cover the Drunk state’s missing block — see the Phantom Edge catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to drink mid-fight, or can I pre-drink? Bottomless Drink works out of combat, so you can enter an arena already Tipsy. Drunk requires the Tipsy state first, so the full ramp always costs at least one mid-fight window.
Is the Fanatic’s Broken Blade missable? No — Hua Qianxiao is on the main path into Crimson Forest, so the weapon cannot be skipped. The truly missable weapons are covered in the Fiend Saws guide.
Does the Drunk auto-dodge work on everything? It handles ordinary incoming attacks, but unblockable red-flash attacks still demand real defensive answers — and you cannot block while Drunk, so manage the state before you commit.
