Is there a water-level puzzle in Meigu Lake?
Meigu Lake is Phantom Blade Zero’s strangest region: a vast stretch of water between the Village of Lu and Pangzhen that you explore by boat, docking at islands to tag bells and slowly reveal the map. Only one location here is story-required, but the lake carries three dock bosses, a true-ending keystone, and the fight that finishes the Illusory Pipa. This Meigu Lake walkthrough covers how to reach the water, what to hit first, and how to leave nothing behind.
How to Reach Meigu Lake
The unlock is a three-step chain out of Pangzhen:
- Pick up the quest. At Myst’s Tavern, ask Myst about the boatmaster to log the Sha-Chi Powered Boat quest.
- Activate the Flaming Mane. Finish Pangzhen’s main objectives through the Lion Dance Grandmaster in the city’s northwestern corner, then visit the NPC marked on your map — this activates the Flaming Mane’s vine-burning function. The Phantom Edge alone is not enough; the NPC visit is the step players miss.
- Burn through and beat Soulclaimer. Head to the northeastern corner near the Pavilion of Knowledge and burn the thorny brambles. Follow the streets and rooftops past the Dockside Warehouse bell to Soulclaimer, Elite Shadow Warden — a fast Maskwalker elite who drops the Parting Hooks dual weapon. Below him wait Pangzhen Docks and the mechanized boat.
How the Lake Works: Boats, Bells, and Barriers
The boat never runs out of fuel, so sail freely. Docking at a bell reveals that stretch of the map, and bells double as fast-travel points for clean-up runs. Two barrier types gate the lake’s loot: misty seals that only the repaired Illusory Pipa dispels, and the mirror in the frozen north that demands four Acolyte Masks. The story exit is the Weeping Mistgate in the north — an Illusory Pipa barrier on the road to the Mountain of Imprisonment, covered in our Six Paths Warrant walkthrough. One caveat: no launch-week source documents the rumored water-level puzzle here — that mechanic is community mapping in progress, and the verified gates above are what actually block progress.
First Stop: Songhouse Island and Yan Qiansui
Make the ruined songhouse your first dock. Before you tie up, circle the island and collect the six Yan’er’s Memory Flowers floating on the water — the first sits almost straight ahead of your starting position, and two drift back toward the Pangzhen side. The flowers open the arena of Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden: parry her blue orbs to reflect them and break her guard, then punish. She drops the Illusory Pipa Strings and the Fanatic’s Fragment: Attachment. Full fight breakdown on the Yan Qiansui boss page; the three-part repair chain is mapped in our Illusory Pipa parts guide. Take the components to Myst, then return — the songhouse’s left barrier hides a Blackstone Fragment and the right one a Soul Tempering material.
The Three Dock Bosses
Three optional fights anchor the lake’s outer docks, and the first two count toward the Master of the Misty Waters achievement:
- Grief-Stricken Jin — Village of Lu Shallows Dock. Near the waters where Mu Xiaokui fell. A grief-maddened duelist; bring healing and tempered weapons. Reward: the Embroidered Shoes Soul Tempering material.
- One-Eyed Archer — One-Eyed Isle (Lake Banyan Dock). When two floating eyes appear, lasers sweep the arena and a Red Flash follows — dodge the whole sequence, then retaliate. Reward: the One-Eyed Bow Phantom Edge. The island’s Banyan Tree challenge also pays out The Banyan’s Heart.
- You Loong, Blackwater Crew Leader — Blackwater Crew Dock. A rematch far meaner than the Pangzhen original; bring guard-break pressure and do not overcommit. Rewards: the Loong Trident Phantom Edge and the High-power Pump Soul Tempering material. Loot the big house afterward for the crew’s second Memory Flower and a hidden purple chest.

The Sha-Chi Tower and the Frozen North
Two late stops close the region. First, sail around the lake’s Sha-Chi Tower to its lower opening — the top floors are a decoy. Bait the powderkeg carrier into blowing the wall to expose Zhu Yuan, the Searing Blade, an optional fire boss who is nonetheless required for the true ending; equip Flameward and claim his Scorching Flames material. Deeper in the lower passage lies the Primal Stone for the Friendly Shadow Warden’s A Severed Mindseal tale.
Second, the northwestern ice field. Do not sail at the ice head-on — slip through the cove on its western side to reach the Frozen Lake Dock and the fishing village where Old Man Gen’s Journey Home concludes. Beyond sits the Four Guardians’ Mirror, which opens only with all four Acolyte Masks (one comes from the Crimson Manor) and hides the Phantom Illusionist Ruins and the Blizzard Blademaster. En route, the Midlake Long Pillar hosts the Gold-Masked One, one of the lake’s two Long Pillar challenges.
Memory Flowers and Clean-Up
PowerPyx counts 84 collectibles and 30 Memory Flowers on the lake — the sets work exactly like the earlier regions detailed in our Crimson Forest Memory Flower guide. Do not skip Meigu Village East Dock: the Red-Cloth Door Key opens a Blackstone Fragment room, and the scarecrow at the island’s far end summons Acolyte Guhe for Guhe’s Venom Mask. Finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake here before the Mirage Estate point of no return — the rest survives into free roam.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I explore Meigu Lake before repairing the Illusory Pipa? Yes — the boat and most docks are open immediately. Only the mist barriers and the Weeping Mistgate wait on the repaired Pipa, so dock everywhere and circle back after Myst fixes the instrument.
Which Meigu Lake fight is required for the story? Only the route to the Weeping Mistgate is mandatory. Zhu Yuan is optional but true-ending-required; Yan Qiansui is technically optional but her Pipa Strings unlock everything the mist blocks.
What is the third Shadow Warden on the lake? Heartpiercer, Elite Shadow Warden — opening the Loong Emblem door triggers the fight, and it drops the Sundering Dual Axes. With Soulclaimer it completes the Three Wardens Fall achievement.
