FAQ

How many Long Pillars are there in Phantom Blade Zero?
Five. They are located in Weeping Creek Valley, the Crimson Forest, the eastern island of Meigu Lake, the Phantom Illusionist Ruins mirror realm, and Pangzhen's Mirage Estate.
Can you do the Long Pillars in any order?
Yes — once Bloodline Awakening is accepted, all pillars are marked on the map and can be cleared in any order. However, the Man in Black fights inside them always escalate in the same fixed sequence regardless of which pillar you touch first.
What trophy does Bloodline Awakening give?
Completing all five Long Pillar trials unlocks the silver trophy Phantom and Blade, and Bloodline Awakening is one of the two story tales required for the true ending.
Is Bloodline Awakening missable?
The pillars themselves stay available deep into the endgame, but your ending locks in when the fight against Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil begins — finish all five trials before that point.

What Is Bloodline Awakening?

Bloodline Awakening is one of the two story tales that decide which ending Phantom Blade Zero gives you — the other being Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. It appears on the Quests > Story tab the moment you find your first Long Pillar, and its objectives are deceptively simple: find all five Long Pillars and complete their trials, then return to a pillar as new discoveries unfold. The pillars are enormous dragon statues scattered across the Wulin, and early in the game each one only offers a cryptic “Continue / Leave” prompt — Soul senses an enormous sealed power inside, connected to his visions, and nothing more happens until the trials properly begin.

Finishing all five is not optional flavor. It awards the Phantom and Blade silver trophy and is a hard requirement for the Final Battle version of the true ending — see our all endings guide for how the two quest chains interlock.

How Do the Long Pillar Trials Work?

Interacting with a Long Pillar once Bloodline Awakening is active transports Soul into a separate realm for a duel against the Man in Black, also known as the Gold-Masked One. Key rules confirmed by PowerPyx:

  • Any order, fixed sequence. You can visit the five pillars in whatever order you like — once the tale is accepted, they are all marked on your map — but the five Man in Black encounters always play out in the same escalating order regardless of which statue you touch first.
  • Each duel is a real boss fight. His aerial combos end in either a blue flash (parry it) or a black flash (dodge it), and he is blindingly fast. GameSpot recommends the Outlaw Warblade for these bouts, since the two-hander heals you on every hit.
  • Rewards drop per trial. Verified payouts include the Counterstrike Bracers (an accessory that boosts your damage after a successful parry) from the Weeping Creek Valley pillar and the Miraculous Scabbard (brief super armor and damage reduction on weapon switch) from the Crimson Forest pillar. The remaining three rewards are still being mapped by the community.

If the parry-vs-dodge flash system is new to you, the combat system guide breaks it down before you burn healing flasks learning it mid-duel.

All Five Long Pillar Locations

Pillar 1: Weeping Creek Valley

First, complete the Deep in the Valley quest to open the optional section of the region. Then, in the Order encampment, grab the Rusted Loong Key sitting next to the Crane Bell. Push on to the open clearing full of Maskwalker enemies, unlock the door with the key, and the dragon pillar waits at the end of the tunnel. Two bonuses here: the herb needed for Yu’er’s Apprentice Healer side quest grows nearby, and a weakened wall close to the pillar hides a Soul Temper material — though blasting it open needs the late-game Tiger Cannon.

Pillar 2: Crimson Forest

After the Iron Fever boss fight, follow the tunnel that cuts through the mountain. The pillar stands inside a red-lit cave — the Mirrorwood Lóng Pillar bell sits right by it, so you cannot really miss the chamber once you are through the pass.

Pillar 3: Meigu Lake — Eastern Island

Once you reach Meigu Lake, board the mechanical boat and sail to the easternmost island on the map. The pillar there is guarded by a pack of enemies including a Butcher — clear the camp before you touch the statue, or the trial prompt stays out of reach.

Pillar 4: Phantom Illusionist Ruins (Discordance)

The fourth pillar hides inside the mirror realm reached through the Four Guardians Mirror on the frozen northwestern edge of Meigu Lake — entry requires all four Acolyte Masks. After waking in the Discordance realm, cross the mountain pass to the fishing village, look across the cliffside to spot the pillar, and smash the gate with the Dread Axe to reach it. The full mirror-realm route is in our Crystal Puppet Eyes guide, since the same trip covers both checklists.

Pillar 5: Pangzhen — Mirage Estate

The final pillar sits on the western side of Mirage Estate, a subsection of Pangzhen reached naturally through late main-story progression. GameSpot redacts this location entirely for spoiler reasons and Game Informer describes it only as the non-optional finale area, but PowerPyx and Hardcore Gamer both pin it to Pangzhen. Since Mirage Estate is on the critical path, this is the one pillar you genuinely cannot miss — just sweep the western edge when you arrive.

Rewards, Trophy, and the True Ending

Beyond the per-trial accessories, clearing the fifth trial completes Bloodline Awakening outright — that quest completion is your confirmation that the pillar side of the true-ending checklist is done, and it pops the Phantom and Blade silver trophy. Combined with a finished Secrets at the Heart of the Lake (including the conversation with Inanis), this is exactly what upgrades the finale into the Final Battle, where the true final boss follows the standard one. The pillar fights themselves sit on the harder end of the optional roster; the complete boss list has scouting notes, and a detour through the Soul Tempering guide pays off in every duel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Long Pillars show on the map? Yes — but only after you find your first one and Bloodline Awakening is accepted. From that point all five pillars are marked, which is why the Weeping Creek Valley or Crimson Forest statue usually ends up being players’ first.

What is the point of no return for Bloodline Awakening? Your ending locks in when the fight against Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil begins. Treat the game’s endgame warnings as hard deadlines and finish all five trials before crossing that bridge.

Is the Man in Black the same fight five times? No. The five encounters escalate in a fixed sequence — later trials add speed and new strings — but the escalation order does not depend on which pillars you visit first.
