Apprentice Healer is the second of three tales given by Yu’er, the aspiring healer of Weeping Creek Valley — and the middle leg of The Healer’s Legacy, one of the game’s missable bronze trophies. She asks a simple question: can Soul gather three medicinal herbs so she can treat the wounded? The herbs sit across the entire valley, two of them behind traversal and key gates, and the whole tale runs on a timer that ends with Jing Ye in the next region. If you want the Medicine Case — one of the strongest early accessories in Phantom Blade Zero — this guide gets you there without backtracking.
How to Start
Yu’er appears at the Outpost — the first settlement in Weeping Creek Valley — after you defeat Peng Meng, the Axemaster, standing near the blacksmith by the Outpost Bell. Talk to her and pick the “Gather Herbs” dialogue option. Three pins appear on your map, but pins are not paths: two of the three herbs require key items and Phantom Edge traversal to actually reach.
You do not need to finish her first tale, Flesh Lily, before starting this one — the two can run in parallel, and you should, because both feed the same trophy chain.
Herb 1: Blood-Stopper Vine
The easiest of the three. Head toward the Axemaster’s Holding Cell bell area, where the ground drops toward the river east of the cell. Instead of following the upper road, drop down to the stream below — a short way past the enemies that patrol the water, the Blood-Stopper Vine glows at the end of the creek. Its dark crimson sap is said to stem bleeding, per the item’s flavor text.
Herb 2: Congealeaf
Behind the bridge, on the high path. Fast travel to the Long Pillar Overlook bell. From there, follow the main road east across the bridge, past the watchtower. When the road offers a lower drop into the valley, stay high — wall-run across the gap (or climb the ladder to the wooden rafters, if you came up from the boulder below) and continue along the cliff edge.
The Congealeaf glows beside a large rock formation directly opposite the locked cave door — the one that needs the Rusted Loong Key. If you can see the key-locked door in the rockface, the herb is the orange glow behind you. Clear the enemies guarding the ledge first; the pickup is on the ground, not in a chest.
If this high route is not open yet, finish the valley’s mid-section first — GameSpot notes the Congealeaf sits beyond the gate you open via the Deep in the Valley route.
Herb 3: Blemish Goldweed
Through the locked cave, past the dragon statue. The third herb shares the Congealeaf’s neighborhood but hides behind a key gate:
- Pick up the Rusted Loong Key from the chest beside the Long Pillar Overlook bell if you have not already.
- Return to the locked cave door near the Congealeaf rock and open it.
- Fight through the tunnel until you emerge into daylight at the Weeping Creek Long Pillar — the massive dragon statue arena, home of an optional Gold-Masked One boss fight.
- Turn toward the river and follow the water northwest of the statue. A short distance along the path, the Blemish Goldweed glows on the ground to the right of the trail, hard to miss once the statue is your landmark. You do not need to fight the Long Pillar boss for the herb — sprinting past works fine if you are under-leveled.
Return to Yu’er and Claim the Medicine Case
With Blood-Stopper Vine, Congealeaf, and Blemish Goldweed in your pack, bell back to the Outpost and hand them over. Yu’er rewards you with the Medicine Case accessory, which increases the healing effect of all medicines by 20% — a permanent boost that stays relevant deep into the endgame, and a staple pick in early accessory lineups.
The Deadline: Finish Before Jing Ye
This is the part that kills playthroughs. Per PowerPyx, Apprentice Healer fails once you defeat Jing Ye, the Outlaw — the mounted boss of Crimson Forest. Maxroll’s testing suggests the cutoff may land even earlier, at the Thieves’ Camp Crane Bell. Treat the earlier trigger as binding: complete the whole herb run while you are still in Weeping Creek Valley, not “sometime before Crimson Forest’s boss.”
Failing is silent — the Journal simply marks the tale red — so check your Tales tab before crossing into Crimson Forest. If it is red, reload your region-start manual save. Full cutoff context lives in the missable quests checklist and our Jing Ye boss guide.
Where This Sits in The Healer’s Legacy
Apprentice Healer is tale two of three:
- Flesh Lily — gather the Twin Flesh Lilies from the fields below the Sha-Chi Tower and hand them in before Bai Chilian.
- Apprentice Healer — this tale, before Jing Ye.
- A Healer’s Mercy — treat all four wounded thieves in Crimson Forest, also before Bai Chilian.
All three are required for The Healer’s Legacy bronze trophy — plan one valley sweep and one forest sweep rather than three separate trips. The chain is tracked in the trophy guide and the all-tales roster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to finish Flesh Lily first?
No. Polygon’s quest coverage confirms the two tales are independent — talk to Yu’er at the Outpost and Apprentice Healer starts regardless of Flesh Lily’s state.
Where exactly is the Rusted Loong Key?
In a chest right next to the Long Pillar Overlook bell. Grab it on your way to the Congealeaf so the Blemish Goldweed cave is already open.
Is the Medicine Case worth it?
Yes — a flat 20% boost to every medicine you will ever drink, earned for one herb run. Few accessories in Phantom Blade Zero pay off that early for that long.
