What Is Purge the Sect?
Purge the Sect is a two-objective Tale in Weeping Creek Valley, and its name is official — you will find it listed as Purge the Sect in the in-game Tales menu, on Fextralife’s quest index, and in Game8’s walkthrough database. The quest log entry is blunt: “Eliminate the Old Archer’s corrupted disciples at the Ruthless Archer Camp.” The reward is the Feather Bow, almost certainly the first Ranged Phantom Edge you can obtain, which is why this tiny quest matters far beyond its length.
It is also one of the game’s true missables. There is no late-game make-up session: miss the deadline and the Feather Bow is locked out until New Game Plus. The full list of cutoffs lives in our missable side quests guide; the deadline section below is the part that applies here.
Miss It and Lose It: The Bai Chilian Deadline
Hard cutoff: defeat Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents — the final boss of the Crimson Forest.
Beating Bai Chilian advances the story to the Village of Lu and permanently alters the Outpost and Thieves’ Camp. Multiple launch-week walkthroughs (keengamer, ShowGamer) flag the same rule: Purge the Sect must be finished, not merely started, before that fight. The good news is that everything you need sits in Chapter 1’s Weeping Creek Valley, so a ten-minute detour at the Outpost settles it. If you are about to cross into the Crimson Forest’s endgame, check your Tales list first — this is exactly the quest players forget.
Step 1: The Brooding Old Archer at the Outpost
Location: Weeping Creek Valley — the Outpost bell.
From the Outpost bell, head east toward the two houses and climb onto the roof of the left one. The Brooding Old Archer — that is his actual name tag — is a wounded archer standing roughly 66 m from the bell. Speak to him to hear his troubles: his disciples have been corrupted, and he wants them put down and his sect’s honor restored. The Tale registers immediately, with two tracked objectives in order: eliminate the corrupted disciples, then return the bow.
While you are on the rooftops, note the rest of the Outpost’s quest density: the chain-sealed courtyard nearby starts Festering Secret, and Yu’er begins Apprentice Healer here. Batch the errands in one sweep.
Step 2: Clear the Ruthless Archer Camp
Location: past Creek Valley Plains Entrance, on the main route through the valley.
Push through Creek Valley Plains Entrance and follow the path to the Ruthless Archer Camp — a camp separate from the others with its own bell. Ring that bell first; the corrupted disciples wait about 11 m away, and archers hold elevated platforms and defensive positions throughout the camp. Fight patiently: close the distance along the wooden walkways, and do not duel on the platforms where a knockdown throws you into a second archer’s line of fire.
Once the camp is clear, proceed up the wooden steps to the chest near the top, guarded by one last enemy. Open it to claim the Broken-String (Feather) Bow — the item card notes it is broken and needs repair, which the second objective covers. Do not worry about losing it: it is a quest item, not a droppable weapon.
Step 3: Return the Bow and Receive the Feather Bow
Fast travel back to the Outpost bell, climb the roof, and hand the Broken-String Bow to the Old Archer. He fits it with a new string and passes it back as the Feather Bow — “A powerful bow repaired and restrung by the old archer. A formidable weapon at range.” — completing the Tale. The whole return trip takes under a minute; the entire quest, bell to bell, is ten to fifteen minutes.
Why the Feather Bow Earns a Slot
The Feather Bow belongs to the Ranged Phantom Edge family, whose upgrades start from Ancient Timber, and its exploration ability is the reason to grab it early: Ranged Shot lets you shoot down hanging objects from a distance even when the bow is not equipped, which opens loot and interactables that stay out of melee reach. Epic Games’ official Phantom Edge guide adds that it deals increased damage against enemies at full health, making it a strong opener from stealth or the start of an ambush. If you are deciding which Phantom Edges deserve upgrade materials, our best Phantom Edges guide ranks the whole kit, and the all weapons list shows where it fits among every main weapon and Phantom Edge in the game.
Because it arrives in Chapter 1, the Feather Bow also doubles as a tutorial for the Ranged slot: spend a Remnant Spark, learn the shooting arc, and you will understand every later Ranged Edge — Flying Dagger, Goldblaze — the moment they drop.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level should I be for Purge the Sect? There is no gate — the Tale is available the moment you reach the Outpost in Chapter 1, and the camp’s archers are standard valley enemies. Clear it while you are in the area rather than postponing it.
What happens if I defeat Bai Chilian before finishing Purge the Sect? The Tale closes permanently on that save. The Outpost changes, the Old Archer’s rooftop scene is gone, and the Feather Bow cannot be obtained until New Game Plus.
Is the Feather Bow the first ranged weapon in Phantom Blade Zero? Yes — among Phantom Edges it is the earliest Ranged pickup. Later Ranged options like the Flying Dagger (from Quick Hand Zhang’s treasure requests) arrive in the Crimson Forest at the earliest.
Where exactly is the Brooding Old Archer? On the roof of the house east of the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost bell, about 66 m from it. Climb the adjacent structure or drop from higher ground to reach him.
