Who Is Cavalrybane, Elite Shadow Warden?

Cavalrybane is the first of the three Shadow Wardens — elite Perfect Transcension enforcers of the Shadow Sovereign — that Soul crosses in Pangzhen. You meet him in Chapter 4, Town of Death, at enemy level 11, with archive data listing 62,900 HP and 110.8 attack on Wayfarer. His dossier sketches something colder than a zealot: he was once a Mandate elite whose instinct for obedience was only deepened by the “Mindseal.” He weighs neither gain nor loss, harbors no personal thought, and exists purely to execute commands. “Armybreaker and he have long since become one. His body is the blade. The command is his path.”

Mechanically, he is the game teaching you the Shadow Warden template the series will lean on three times: black-robed, weapon-as-trophy, broad and disciplined saber work. He is also the opening entry in the Three Wardens Fall bronze trophy, which requires defeating Cavalrybane, Soulclaimer, and Heartpiercer. Note that the trophy only pops after the last of the three falls, so do not panic when he dies trophy-less. Track your progress in our trophy guide.

Where to Find Cavalrybane

He guards a street intersection in Pangzhen’s market quarter:

  • Head west from the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads bell to reach his arena; some guides reference the nearby Huang Manor Crossroads and the entrance to the Order’s underground tavern — the Marketplace bell is roughly 68 meters away.
  • The fight is on the Chapter 4 main path, so you cannot miss him.
  • Before engaging, sweep the block: a locked door in his arena requires the Tianxiang Pavilion Key, which ties into a later Pangzhen quest, and an accessory that boosts damage to mounted enemies sits in a chest down a ledge reached with nearby cage machinery.

Cavalrybane’s Attacks and Counters

Fextralife’s boss notes break his kit into readable, honest moves. Everything is slow, linear, and telegraphed — the fight is a parry exam, not a reflex test.

  • Two-Hit Combo — A vertical slash followed by a spinning follow-up. Block or parry the first hit, then retaliate to drain his Sha-Chi.
  • Charged Slashes — He spins backward into a slash, then cuts vertically. The follow-up carries a flash indicator: blue means parry for a free punish, red means dodge laterally. This is the fight’s central read.
  • Impaling Charge — He levels the polearm and charges down the street, finishing with a thrust. Block through the run, then sidestep the thrust and punish the long recovery.
  • Leaping Slam — He leaps, spinning the polearm, and impales the ground at your position. Dodge the moment he lands; the slam’s shockwave is the threat, not the flight.
  • Glancing Hits — A pounce with two sweeping swipes and a sidestep. Parry the pounce, then track his reposition instead of chasing.
  • Reverse Slash — A vertical chop followed by a slash rising off the ground. Either dodge backward out of reach or parry the follow-up to drain his meter.

If any of those flash colors are still fuzzy, our combat system guide covers the Brutal Move (blue, parry) versus Killer Move (red, dodge into Ghoststep) rules in detail.

How to Beat Cavalrybane: Strategy

The single most important fact about this fight: your attacks can knock Cavalrybane down even without depleting his Sha-Chi. That flips the usual Phantom Blade Zero script. Instead of patiently parrying until he breaks, you can press the offense, stuff his slow startups, and interrupt him mid-string. Aggression is not just allowed here — it is the intended answer, and it is why he falls so fast at level 11.

A practical loop: hold mid-range to bait a Two-Hit Combo or Charged Slashes, answer the flash correctly (parry the blue, Ghoststep the red), land two or three hits, and back off before his next string. When he charges, do not trade — sidestep the thrust and unload into his recovery. Keep one weapon slot on a fast blade for interrupts and the other on something heavy for punish damage, swapping to refill Sha-Chi mid-fight. On Wayfarer this is a two-to-three minute kill; on Pathbreaker and above his damage climbs enough that sloppy blocking drains you dry, so lean on parries. If the fight still frustrates you, remember you can drop difficulty any time — our difficulty settings guide explains what changes.

Rewards: The Armybreaker

Victory nets 17,400 Remnant Dust and the Armybreaker, a two-edged polearm with two party tricks: switching to it — or parrying a blue-flash attack while wielding it — triggers a short forward rush that closes the gap for you, and its Formation Breaking Art slashes heavily deplete enemy Sha-Chi, cracking guards open for your whole combo. Note that pbz.gg’s reward listing omits the Armybreaker, but Fextralife, Gamerant, and weapon-location guides all agree the drop is his. See the full Armybreaker page for stats and arts.

With Cavalrybane down, one Warden falls and two remain: Soulclaimer waits at the docks near the boat out of Pangzhen, and Heartpiercer stands outside the White Serpent House. The full encounter order lives in our boss list.
