Can you miss the secret bosses permanently?

Phantom Blade Zero’s main road is only half the fight roster. The other half hides behind rifts, scarecrows, wells, portals, and one very committed recurring duelist — and several of them decide whether you ever see the true ending. This page is the curation of every hidden fight: what unlocks it, what it drops, and when to attempt it. Story bosses live on the all bosses list; this page covers only the off-road encounters, unlock conditions first.
The 12 Secret Boss Encounters
1. Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet — The Lady’s Rift, Weeping Creek Valley
The region’s optional rift fight. Interact with the statue beside The Lady’s Rift bell (west of The Beginning) and step into the Sha-Chi rift. You face Yucong in her Steel Mask form; win or lose, you leave with the Three-Headed Doll and the start of the Triple Threat quest, which documents the fight step by step.
2. Hua, Deadly Betrothed — Beneath the Valley Sha-Chi Tower
A hidden bride boss in the Flesh Lily Fields cavern, reached by a slide-down passage under the tower. She guards the Scarlet Wraithblade and the Twin Flesh Lilies for Yu’er’s questline — two rewards, one trip, and a deadline tied to the Flesh Lily tale. Full guide: Hua, Deadly Betrothed.
3. Yucong, No. 34 Twisted Puppet — Crimson Forest & Mirrorwood
The campaign’s longest chase. The Steel Mask form is the Lady’s Rift puppet; her true rematch only spawns after entering the Mirage Estate changes the Crimson Forest. Finish the Triple Threat chain — three Memory Flowers, Blazing Edge equipped — to earn the three-form Freezing Chaos sword.
4-7. The Four Acolytes — Scarecrow Duels Worldwide
Four scarecrows each warp you to an Acolyte: Yanru near the Engine Giant Remains in the Village of Lu, Leiting behind a Flaming Mane-burnable barrier at Pangzhen’s Pond of Fading Song, Guhe on the east village dock island in Meigu Lake, and Hansui inside the Crimson Manor as the second half of the Scavenger duo. All four masks are a hard true ending gate — they shatter the Four Guardians’ Mirror. Details: Acolyte Masks guide.
8. Dusk the Puppeteer — Village of Lu Pit
Gather all six Firefly Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu to open the barrier at the Temple of the Blue Fireflies, then drop into the eastern pit and defeat his puppet army. Drops the Illusory Pipa Head — a true ending item via the pipa repair chain — plus the Puppeteer’s Bell Phantom Edge. Guide: Dusk the Puppeteer.
9. The Gold-Masked One — Five Long Pillar Trials
The Man in Black waits at the end of every Long Pillar trial: Weeping Creek Valley, Crimson Forest Mirrorwood, Meigu Lake Midlake, the Illusionist’s Realm behind the mirror, and the Mirage Estate. He only takes damage after perfect parries, perfect dodges, or Sha-Chi breaks, and clearing all five completes Bloodline Awakening, a true ending requirement. Guide: Gold-Masked One.
10. Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman — Mandate Encampment
A pure skill-check duel in the Mandate Encampment with no quest attached — seek her out after the Mandate Encampment walkthrough opens the region. Drops nothing essential; the reward is the fight itself. Guide: Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman.
11. Corpse-Eating Xue — Mandate Encampment
An optional grotesque lurking in the encampment’s outskirts, also covered in the Mandate Encampment guide. Optional loot, no ending ties.
12. Kui Yanyan, the Deranged — Mountain of Imprisonment
A tragic Maskwalker on the mountain paths whose frenzy breaks pattern-reading — constant pressure beats patience. Defeating her yields the Missing Lift Crank that powers the shrine lift. Guide: Kui Yanyan, region route in the Mountain of Imprisonment walkthrough.
13. Puppet Scavenger & Acolyte Hansui — Crimson Manor Duo
The Crimson Manor’s bottom-of-the-chasm duo: beat the Scavenger, then Hansui freezes it and turns the fight into a second battle. One encounter pays the Alloyed Scythe Blade, the Yang Crystal Puppet Eye, and Hansui’s Frost Mask — three endgame threads closed at once.
14. Blizzard Blademaster — Frozen Northwest, Meigu Lake
The reward fight for the Acolyte hunt. With all four masks, shatter the Four Guardians’ Mirror on the frozen northwestern shore, fight through the hidden realm, and face him at the end. Drops the Whiteshadow frost blade and completes the mirror-realm checklist. Guide: Blizzard Blademaster.
15. You-Loong, the Frenzied Blackwater Crewleader — Meigu Lake
An upgraded rematch of the Pangzhen story fight on the lake’s waters after the main crew falls. Drops the Loong Trident thrown Phantom Edge. Covered in the Meigu Lake walkthrough.
Which Secret Fights Gate the True Ending
Six of the twelve entries are non-negotiable for the Perfect Ending, tracked in the true ending checklist:
- All four Acolyte duels — the masks open the mirror realm.
- Blizzard Blademaster — the mirror realm’s finale.
- Puppet Scavenger & Hansui — the Yang Crystal Puppet Eye.
- Dusk the Puppeteer — the Illusory Pipa Head (pipa repair chain).
- Yan Qiansui — the Illusory Pipa Strings, via her hidden songhouse fight.
- All five Gold-Masked One trials — Bloodline Awakening.
Everything else is power: Freezing Chaos, Whiteshadow, Loong Trident, Scarlet Wraithblade, and the Missing Lift Crank’s shortcut.
Recommended Challenge Order
Follow story order and the hidden fights stay at a fair difficulty band:
- Chapter 1 — Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet, then Hua, Deadly Betrothed; grab Gold-Masked One #1 once the Long Pillar unlocks.
- Village of Lu — Dusk the Puppeteer and Acolyte Yanru.
- Pangzhen — Acolyte Leiting (needs Flaming Mane).
- Mandate Encampment — Corpse-Eating Xue, then Red as a pure duel.
- Meigu Lake — Acolyte Guhe, Yan Qiansui, You-Loong’s rematch, Gold-Masked One #3.
- Mountain of Imprisonment — Kui Yanyan, the Iron Butcher, Gold-Masked One #4.
- Before Mirage Estate — Puppet Scavenger & Hansui, then the Four Guardians’ Mirror and Blizzard Blademaster.
- After the estate — Yucong’s Mirrorwood rematch with Blazing Edge.
Finish every step before the Mirage Estate point of no return — the game warns you about unfinished business at the door, and it means it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Gold-Masked One one boss or five? One recurring opponent, five escalating Long Pillar encounters, each with its own reward — all counting toward Bloodline Awakening.
Do secret bosses scale with difficulty? Yes — Pathbreaker difficulty inflates their HP pools considerably (the Lady’s Rift puppet sits near 89,000 HP), but unlock conditions never change.
