FAQ

Is Young Master Lan the same quest as Young Mistress?
No. Young Master Lan is Lan Shaodi's tale about clearing the Smuggler's Tunnel and the tragedy at his Pangzhen manor. Young Mistress is the separate ribbon-collecting quest tied to Mu Xiaokui in the Village of Lu. They share a region and nothing else.
Where is Young Master Lan's Hideout in the Village of Lu?
In a dry-stone-walled camp low in the valley, downhill from the Crossroads bell and beyond the bottom pond. KeenGamer's route: from Old Man Gen's Hideout, drop from the bridge and climb the wall. Maxroll's route: after beating Zhuo Bi, drop into the gutter beside his arena and climb up on the right. The hideout bell is a few steps from Lan Shaodi's house inside the walls.
What is the reward for Young Master Lan?
The A Wanderer's Honor bronze trophy, plus the Crimson Resolve offensive accessory given after you leave Lan Manor at the end of the Pangzhen arc, per Game8 and AllThingsHow.
Is Young Master Lan missable?
Yes. The Village of Lu report-back expires when you cross into Pangzhen — KeenGamer flags it as one of the two report-backs due before entering the city, alongside The Journey Home. Finish the tunnel, tell Lan Shaodi it is clear, then do his manor arc while you are in Pangzhen.

Lan Shaodi waits at his walled hideout low in the Village of Lu, the start of the Young Master Lan tale

Young Master Lan is Lan Shaodi’s tale — a two-region story that starts in a half-hidden camp in the Village of Lu and ends in tragedy at his family’s manor in Pangzhen. It is also one of the game’s missable trophy quests: completing it awards A Wanderer’s Honor (Bronze). This page is built around the part players actually get stuck on — finding the hideout — and the cutoff that locks the trophy if you miss it.

First, a disambiguation, because the names confuse everyone: Young Master Lan is not Young Mistress. Young Mistress is the collectible quest about Mu Xiaokui’s five ribbons, and its reward is loot, not a trophy. Young Master Lan is Lan Shaodi’s quest line, it has no ribbons, and its payoff is a trophy plus an accessory. If you were hunting ribbons, you want the other page.

Finding Young Master Lan’s Hideout

The hideout is easy to walk past because it sits below the village’s main road, inside a tall dry-stone-walled camp at the bottom of the valley — per AllThingsHow, downhill from the Crossroads bell and beyond the pond at the valley floor. Inside the walls you will find a wooden house on a stone base, crates, a broken cart, red-lidded jars, and the Young Master Lan’s Hideout bell a few steps from the door. Ring it; it becomes your closest respawn point to the Zhuo Bi boss arena, which is why speedrunners rest here before the fight.

Two documented routes in:

  • Before the boss (KeenGamer): from Old Man Gen’s Hideout, drop from the bridge and climb the wall below to reach Lan’s camp.
  • After the boss (Maxroll): once Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper falls, drop into the gutter past his arena and climb up on the right to find the bell.

Lan Shaodi — blue robes, a fan, seated at a low table in front of the house — starts the tale when you agree to his request. If you brush him off, talk to him again and accept; refusing the first pass does not break anything.

Step 1: Clear the Smuggler’s Tunnel

Lan Shaodi asks you to reopen the Smuggler’s Tunnel, the passage the Herald has sealed. The tunnel entrance is at the bottom of the Well of the Three Puppets, roughly central in the village. Work through the underground route, kill what is inside — Master Bi Hai of Kuye Temple is the boss guarding it, per Maxroll’s Village of Lu walkthrough — and the tunnel opens as your back door into Pangzhen.

One efficiency note: the tunnel doubles as Old Man Gen’s objective in The Journey Home. Both tales share the same underground leg, so clear it once and report to both NPCs. The full route is mapped in our Village of Lu walkthrough.

Step 2: Report Back Before the Pangzhen Cutoff

This is the missable beat. Tell Lan Shaodi the tunnel is clear before you enter Pangzhen. KeenGamer lists this report-back alongside Old Man Gen’s as a hard requirement due before crossing the region line; our missable side quests checklist and trophy guide treat the cutoff the same way. Lan explains that the children he took in have been waiting at his manor in the city, claims the Herald has been told, and asks you to meet him there.

Step 3: The Lan Manor Arc in Pangzhen

The manor sits a short walk from the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads bell — per AllThingsHow, roughly 25 meters along the road, marked by carved posts flanking dark wooden double doors. Approach and a cutscene plays: Lan Shaodi bargaining with the Herald’s men over the children he promised to move by boat. Afterward you receive the Lan Manor Key, and the objective becomes: rest at any bell, then return.

Reloading the area spawns two puppet children outside the manor — kill both, then find Lan Shaodi on the ground, dying. He passes you the key’s purpose in one last conversation. Unlock the manor, speak with the Wulin Fighter inside, and he confirms what the arc was building toward: Lan Shaodi’s intentions were sincere, and working with the Herald was his doomed attempt to keep the children alive. Step back outside and the tale completes.

Rewards: Trophy and Accessory

  • A Wanderer’s Honor (Bronze) — the trophy for completing Young Master Lan, per PowerPyx’s trophy list as aggregated by community trackers. It is one of the six side-quest trophies on the road to platinum in our trophy guide.
  • Crimson Resolve — an offensive accessory awarded as you leave the manor, per Game8. Slot it into one of your three accessory slots; the all accessories guide covers how it stacks with the rest of your build.

Why the Hideout Bell Matters Beyond the Quest

Even after the tale closes, Young Master Lan’s Hideout stays useful. It is the nearest bell to the Zhuo Bi arena for rematches, it anchors the low-valley sweep for the Quick Hand Zhang treasures on that side of the village, and Bashpole users can unearth the Border Banner — Bastion’s Soul Temper material — from the ground near the bell, as cataloged in our Soul Temper materials index.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already entered Pangzhen without reporting to Lan Shaodi. Can I still get A Wanderer’s Honor?

Not this playthrough — the Village of Lu conversation is the trigger that carries the tale into the city, and it expires at the region line. The trophy has to wait for New Game+.

Does clearing the tunnel for Lan Shaodi also count for The Journey Home?

Yes. The Smuggler’s Tunnel leg serves both tales; report to Old Man Gen and Lan Shaodi in the same village visit.

Is Crimson Resolve the only gear reward?

Yes — no weapon or Phantom Edge comes from this tale. Its real prizes are the trophy and the accessory; the story is the third reward.
