FAQ

How do you start Daughter of the Dark Sect in Phantom Blade Zero?
Progress Chapter 7 until you defeat Gu Wanyue in the Pangzhen Backstreets, claim the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key, and unlock the Mandate Encampment region. Then speak with the disoriented swordswoman standing near the Dovecote Bell to start the Tale.
Should you kill Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman?
No. When the duel begins on the Dovecote tower, use the chain to swing away and escape instead of defeating her. Killing her ends Daughter of the Dark Sect immediately and permanently misses the Twin Fish Pendant, her Memory Flower, her return in the Chief Disciple fight, and a permanent 5% max HP boost.
Where does Red appear again?
During the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Star Formation fight at the Three Towers. When his second phase, the Sword of Despair, drops to about half HP, Red joins him as an ally. Defeating both earns the Swordsman's Summon Phantom Edge and the Training Grounds Key.
What are the rewards for Daughter of the Dark Sect?
The Swordsman's Summon Phantom Edge and the Training Grounds Key from the Chief Disciple duel, plus the Twin Heroes' Memory Flowers: Red's flower grants the Twin Fish Pendant, and collecting both flowers grants a permanent 5% increase to maximum HP.

Who Is Red?

Daughter of the Dark Sect (Tale #26 on the All Tales index) is Phantom Blade Zero’s identity-mystery questline. A disoriented woman outside the Dovecote of the Mandate Encampment asks you, in effect, to find out who Red really is. The answer plays out across two boss encounters, and the Tale hides one of the game’s most punishing missables: kill Red too early and you permanently lose a Phantom Edge’s worth of rewards and a permanent max HP boost. This guide keeps that from happening.

Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman, on the Dovecote tower in the Mandate Encampment

How to Start: The Dovecote

The Tale is gated behind story progress. First clear Chapter 7: The Heart’s Trail, which ends with Gu Wanyue in the Pangzhen Backstreets; that opens the path to the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key and, with it, the Encampment itself. The region’s full layout is mapped in the Mandate Encampment walkthrough.

Once inside, travel to the Dovecote Bell. A woman stands near the tower door, disoriented and evasive. Speak with her and the Tale logs its first objective: learn the identity of Red. She slips inside, and the trail goes upward.

The Tower Climb and the Hidden Duel

Enter the tower behind her, climb the ladder, and follow the upper wooden platforms out onto the scaffolding. At the top waits Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman — the hidden duel this quest is named for.

Here is the decision that defines the whole Tale. When the fight starts, do not defeat her. Instead, use the chain beside the arena to swing across to the other side and disengage. Escaping updates the objective to “Will Red appear again?” and keeps her story alive.

Game8 and PowerPyx are explicit about the cost of killing her: she dies, the Tale ends on the spot, and you permanently lose:

  • her Twin Fish Pendant accessory,
  • her Memory Flower, one of the Twin Heroes’ pair,
  • her cameo later in the region,
  • and the permanent 5% max HP increase that comes from collecting both Memory Flowers.

KeenGamer’s checklist describes the step as simply fighting Red and continuing the investigation — in practice the encounter is designed to be escaped, and the dialogue about her identity only continues if she lives.

Where Red Appears Again: The Chief Disciple Fight

Press on through the Encampment to the Three Towers Bell and challenge the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Star Formation. Midway through the duel he transforms into his second phase, the Chief Disciple, Sword of Despair. When that phase drops to roughly half health, a crimson figure drops in: Red joins him as an ally, fighting two-on-one against you.

This is the real boss fight of the Tale. Manage the duo by staying mobile, punishing the Chief Disciple’s slower swings while Red repositions, and using parries to create openings — the pair covers each other’s recovery windows if you tunnel on one. When both fall, the encounter pays out immediately:

  • Swordsman’s Summon — a new Phantom Edge.
  • Training Grounds Key — opens the next section of the Encampment.

The Twin Heroes’ Memory Flowers

After the fight, two bodies lie in the arena, each with a Memory Flower:

  • The Chief Disciple’s flower grants Twin Heroes’ Memory Flower 2: Own Decision.
  • Red’s flower grants Twin Heroes’ Memory Flower 1: The Mandate’s Decision together with the Twin Fish Pendant accessory.

Collecting both Memory Flowers grants a permanent 5% increase to maximum HP — the quiet best reward on the whole chain. If you spared Red, her story has one last beat: she returns at Mount Soulrend before the final battle, per AllThings. How’s quest coverage, and her flower sits near the Tower Rear Exit bell if you need to backtrack.

How to Handle Red’s Duel (If You Choose to Fight)

Even though sparing her is the correct route, you will trade blows before escaping. Her kit, per Game8 and PCGamesN:

  • Backflip pair. Two of her dangerous moves start with a backward flip: an unblockable one-two ending in a retreating strike, and a dagger throw that only comes out after she lands — delay your dodge for the projectile cue.
  • Crimson-thread bind. When threads snag Soul, a gap-closing strike always follows. Treat the bind as your cue to block or parry, not to attack.
  • Air-step flurry. She can slash while stepping through the air; parry the last hit of the string to open a counterattack window.
  • Cramped arena. The rooftop gives you little room, so position near the chain early so the escape is one swing away.

Rewards

  • Swordsman’s Summon — Phantom Edge from the Chief Disciple duel.
  • Training Grounds Key — Encampment progression key.
  • Twin Fish Pendant — accessory, from Red’s Memory Flower.
  • Permanent +5% max HP — for collecting both Twin Heroes’ Memory Flowers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Daughter of the Dark Sect missable? Yes, in the worst way. Killing Red at the Dovecote ends the Tale immediately and locks the Twin Fish Pendant, her Memory Flower, the 5% HP bonus, and the Swordsman’s Summon sequence. Let her escape and nothing else on the chain is missable before the finale — see the missable side quests guide for every hard cutoff.

What chapter do I need for this quest? You must reach the Mandate Encampment, which happens after Chapter 7’s Gu Wanyue fight. The Encampment walkthrough linked above covers the Outer Gate Key route from the Village of Lu side.

Does Red drop a weapon? No. PCGamesN and TechWiser both list no weapon drop from Red herself; her value is the pendant, the flower, the HP bonus, and her role in the Chief Disciple fight.
