FAQ

Do you fight the Puppet Scavenger and Acolyte Hansui at the same time?
Sort of. The first half is the Scavenger alone. At roughly 50% HP, Hansui appears, freezes the Scavenger, and fights you with ice magic while the beast thaws. The intended flow is to burn Hansui down first, then finish the Scavenger.
What does the Puppet Scavenger drop?
Three items: the Alloyed Scythe Blade (Soul Tempering material for the Hunter's Chain Sickle), the Crystal Puppet Eye [Yang] for Puppet No. 99, and Hansui's Frost Mask, the fourth Acolyte Mask.
Is the Puppet Scavenger missable?
The fight is optional, but nothing expires. The Crimson Manor only opens once you have the Puppet's Tongue from The Herald's Illusion questline, and you can return to the Scavenger Pens any time after that.
Which Puppet Scavenger reward matters most?
For the true ending, the mask and the eye: Hansui's Frost Mask completes the Acolyte mask set for the Four Guardians' Mirror, and the Yang eye is one of the two eyes needed to wake Puppet No. 99 at the Heart of the Lake.

The Puppet Scavenger rears up in the flooded arena beneath Crimson Manor

Who Is the Puppet Scavenger?

The Puppet Scavenger is a hidden boss imprisoned in the flooded arena beneath the Crimson Manor, a sealed side area of Weeping Creek Valley. Its in-game dossier is characteristically grim: a “living puppet” experiment of the Herald, pieced together from the remains of a burly strongman using Puppetry and Thread-Binding techniques. The experiment spiraled out of control — the body swelled and warped, no number of masks could contain the Sha-Chi surging within, and not even a greatsword driven through its spine could kill it. The Herald gave up on controlling the Scavenger and put it to work instead, feeding it discarded puppets and troublesome members of the righteous path. Somewhere amid the knotted flesh sits a delicate crystal eye: one of two needed to activate Puppet No. 99.

How to Reach the Scavenger Pens

The manor itself stays locked until late in the Village of Lu chapter — you need the Puppet’s Tongue, earned through The Herald’s Illusion questline, to open the puppet-shaped lock on its doors. Polygon’s Crimson Manor guide walks through the three portal doors, the shaft beneath the Valley Sha-Chi Tower, and the Mute who finally lets you in; our Crimson Manor walkthrough covers the full descent.

Once inside, head down past the second-floor library — Leng Tu’s Memory Flower is there — and drop onto the red thread lines on the way to the bottom, or the chasm will eat your health bar. Ring the Scavenger Pens bell before stepping into the arena so a death returns you to a checkpoint, and rest to top off your gourd.

Phase One: The Scavenger Alone

The first half of the fight is a single name bar: the Scavenger brings 155,200 HP, with a Sha-Chi pool of 37,240 on Pathbreaker — halved to 18,620 on Wayfarer. Nearly everything it does is a slow, telegraphed blade attack with enormous reach: a rolling ball charge that barrels across the shallow water, a cleaver swing big enough to fill the screen, a low crescent sweep dragged flat across the floor, a straight-down blade slam, and a rearing overhead. The rhythm is simple — block or parry the sequence, and watch for the second hit flashing blue, which must be parried, not dodged. Damage sticks slowly; two clean minutes of offense only shave a sliver off the bar, so settle in and don’t burn healing early.

Phase Two at 50%: Hansui Freezes the Scavenger

At roughly half health, the fight changes completely. Acolyte Hansui, the fourth and final hidden Acolyte, appears and encases the Scavenger in ice — a second name bar joins the top of the screen with 62,080 HP and a small 9,310 Sha-Chi pool. This is a target-switch check, not a damage race: while the beast is frozen solid, pour everything into Hansui. PCGamesN’s boss guide is blunt about why — the acolyte’s ice controls the tempo of the entire second half.

Hansui fights with three ice patterns: a spike line that races across the water toward you, tall ice pillars that split the arena into lanes, and a close-range frost burst. Two extra rules keep you alive. First, leave the circle of ice on the floor the moment it appears — standing in it freezes you. Second, when Hansui leaves a frozen decoy, do not be standing next to it when the decoy detonates, or you eat the freeze explosion. Getting frozen while the Scavenger thaws is exactly the run-killer this phase exists to create. Kill Hansui, and the thawed beast — skin red and raw — is all that remains, but with no ice controlling the arena, phase one’s rules carry you to the finish.

Three Rewards, Three Different Systems

The duo pays out three items, and each feeds a different part of the endgame:

  • Alloyed Scythe Blade — Soul Tempering material for the Hunter’s Chain Sickle. Full breakdown in our Alloyed Scythe Blade guide and Hunter’s Chain Sickle page.
  • Crystal Puppet Eye [Yang] — the white, fish-shaped half of the taiji pair. Slot it with the Yin eye into Puppet No. 99 to open the road to the Heart of the Lake.
  • Hansui’s Frost Mask — the fourth and final Acolyte Mask, completing the set you present at the Four Guardians’ Mirror. Our Acolyte masks guide tracks all four hidden bearers.

Beating the pair also pops the silver trophy Nothing Goes to Waste (“Defeat the Puppet Scavenger”) and clears the “Search the Crimson Manor for the Crystal Eyeball [Yang]” objective inside Secrets at the Heart of the Lake — the quest chain that gates the true ending.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both bosses share one health bar?

No. Each has its own bar and Sha-Chi pool. Hansui’s is far smaller, which is another reason the fight wants you to switch targets the moment he appears.

What level should I be for the Puppet Scavenger?

There is no hard gate, but the fight is a long war of attrition on Pathbreaker. If two minutes of clean play barely moves the bar, upgrade your weapon or drop to Wayfarer to halve the Scavenger’s Sha-Chi pool.

Does Hansui’s Frost Mask do anything after the fight?

Yes — it is the last piece of the Acolyte mask set. All four masks are submitted at the Four Guardians’ Mirror in frozen northwestern Meigu Lake to enter the Phantom Illusionist Ruins and reach the Blizzard Blademaster.
