Who Is Red, the Mysterious Swordswoman?
Red is the woman in red waiting atop the tower beside the Dovecote bell in the Mandate Encampment, filed in the Gallery of the Archives under Perfect Transcensions. Her entry is one of the saddest in the game: her swordplay is light and graceful, yet Sha-Chi has already burned her face into a twisted hollow. Only a thread of reason remains, and she stays atop the tower as if waiting for someone important — which is why, when she fights Soul, she has no intention of giving it her all. The full archive text reveals the tragedy underneath: she came from an evil sect and fell in love with the Chief Disciple of a Mandate sect. The Mandate’s leadership could never tolerate her origins, turned the love into an excuse for persecution, humiliated her again and again, and then hypocritically spared her life. She survived for one reason: revenge.
Where the Fight Triggers
Red’s duel is the second beat of the Daughter of the Dark Sect tale. Per Game8’s walkthrough, you must first clear Chapter 7, The Heart’s Trail, and defeat Gu Wanyue — that opens the path to the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key, which unlocks the region from the Village of Lu side. Inside the camp, speak to the Disoriented Swordswoman beside the Dovecote bell; the tale starts and points you up the tower behind her. At the top, Red waits, and the duel begins the moment the exchange ends. See the full chain in our Daughter of the Dark Sect quest guide, and the region overview in the Mandate Encampment guide.
Red’s Moveset: Three Things to Respect
Game8’s freshly updated boss page breaks her kit into three readable patterns:
- Backflip unblockables. Two of her dangerous moves share one animation: a one-two slash that ends in an unblockable retreating strike, and a dagger throw that only comes out after she lands from the flip. Delay your dodge until the projectile cue, not the flip itself.
- Air-step slash flurry. Red walks on air through a flurry of slashes. Land a perfect parry on the final hit and she opens up for a counterattack — do not punish earlier hits mid-string.
- Crimson thread bind. Whenever the threads latch onto you, a gap-closing strike is guaranteed to follow. The bind telegraphs it clearly, so pre-time your block or parry instead of panicking.
The Choice: Do Not Kill Her
Here is the part most players learn too late. Game8’s warning box — added to the guide on November 4 — is unambiguous: do not defeat Red during your first encounter, or you will miss the Twin Fish Pendant. Killing her at the tower ends Daughter of the Dark Sect on the spot. The intended exit is mechanical: a chain hangs beside the arena. Use it to disengage, swing across to the other side, and the fight simply ends — the tale advances to its final prompt, “Will Red appear again?” The first fight drops nothing at all; everything of value lives behind the mercy option.
The Hidden Phase 2: Sword of Despair Plus Red
Keep pushing through the encampment to the Three Towers bell, where the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation waits. His second phase transforms him into the Chief Disciple, Sword of Despair — and per Game8’s walkthrough, once his phase-2 health drops to around half, Red joins the fight if and only if you spared her. Community captures of the encounter, including PowerPyx’s boss-guide footage of the Seven-Stars Formation duel, document this duo phase in practice; the exact join trigger timing is still being community mapped frame by frame, but the spare requirement itself is confirmed by Game8 and multiple community clears.
This is the reward fight, and it pays like one: victory immediately grants the Swordsman’s Summon Phantom Edge and the Training Grounds Key, and sparing Red is what secures the Twin Fish Pendant from her tower encounter. Afterward, the bodies of Red and the Chief Disciple each hold a Memory Flower — Red’s grants the memory “I. THE MANDATE’S DECISION” along with a Sha-Chi accessory found near the Tower Rear Exit bell. The Chief Disciple’s flower contents are still being catalogued by the community. And if you spared her, Red is not done: she returns at Mount Soulrend before the final battle, closing her thread where the game ends. Our Mount Soulrend walkthrough marks that late encounter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Red’s first fight on the trophy list?
No dedicated trophy exists for the tower duel itself; her encounter matters for quest completion, the pendant, and the hidden duo phase rather than the trophy list.
Can you go back if you already killed Red?
Only in a later playthrough or an earlier save. Her death permanently closes Daughter of the Dark Sect’s true ending-adjacent rewards for that run — the pendant and the duo fight are both gone.
Is the hidden phase 2 harder than the normal Chief fight?
Yes — you are fighting the Sword of Despair while Red’s unblockable backflips and thread binds pressure you from a second angle. Clear adds fast, keep both duelists on screen, and parry Red’s flurry finisher for breathing room.
