How do you leave Pangzhen?
Pangzhen is Phantom Blade Zero’s largest region — a walled city of rooftops, backstreets and manor courtyards holding 27 bells (more than any other region), 12 boss encounters, 22 chests and the game’s densest key-item chain. You arrive through the Smuggler’s Tunnel from the Village of Lu, and the city stays relevant longer than any other zone: it feeds the Meigu Lake boat region, the Mirage Estate endgame, and the Mandate Encampment. This Pangzhen walkthrough lays out the main-line boss order, the merchant and key-item map, and what to finish before moving on.
Pangzhen Map: How the City Is Laid Out
The interactive map (allthings.how) splits Pangzhen into recognizable districts:
- The entrance warren — you surface at the Hidden Storehouse bell in the tunnels beneath the city, climb through the Abandoned Wine Cellar and cross the rooftops to the South Gate Bridge bell.
- The commercial core — Jingyang Hall, the Marketplace bell, and Huang Manor Crossroads, where Myst’s Tavern anchors the mid-city.
- The backstreets — Backstreet Rest, Backstreet Archway, Narrow Alley Residence, the Green Serpent House and the Pond of Fading Song.
- The Lion Dance quarter — Lion Dance Hall, Lion Dance Hall Depths and The Sealed Lion in the northwest.
- The docks — Dockside Warehouse and Pangzhen Docks in the northeast, past the Pavilion of Knowledge.
- Old Man Gen’s House and Yu’er’s House mark the residential south.
Myst’s Tavern is the social hub: Myst herself unlocks Soul Tempering here, the boatmaster conversation that starts the Meigu Lake chain happens at the bar, and Shopkeeper Niu hands over the Huang Manor Key.
The Main-Line Boss Progression
Pangzhen’s story bosses run in a fixed order. Rest at each new bell and bank your Remnant Dust before pushing on:
- Blaze, Shadow Warden Captain — ambushes you in the open streets past South Gate Bridge. Drops the Fire Meteor Phantom Edge; landing perfect transcensions also awards the Soulrend Storeroom Key. Full guide: Blaze.
- Cavalrybane, Elite Shadow Warden — duels you in the square at Huang Manor Crossroads. Drops the Armybreaker weapon and The Banyan’s Heart. He is the first of the game’s three Elite Shadow Wardens. Full guide: Cavalrybane.
- Wu Xuan, the Fallen General — the mid-city main-line general. Drops the Wolfjaw Phantom Edge and a Transcension Core. Full guide: Wu Xuan.
- Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith — waits past the Pond of Fading Song bell beside a dry well. Draining her Sha-Chi is the whole fight; descend the well afterward for the Mandate Encampment Gate Key. Full guide: Gu Wanyue.
- Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster — guards the northwestern Lion Dance quarter and drops the Dormant Flaming Mane. Beating him, then visiting the marked NPC, activates the Flaming Mane’s vine-burning function — the gate to Soulclaimer and the docks.
- Soulclaimer, Elite Shadow Warden — holds the courtyard below the Dockside Warehouse bell and drops the Parting Hooks dual weapon. The second Elite Shadow Warden; with Cavalrybane and Meigu Lake’s Heartpiercer he completes the Three Wardens Fall achievement.
Just outside the south gate, on Pangzhen Bridge, the drunken-sword duelist Hua Qianxiao technically belongs to the Crimson Forest’s opening — but most players meet him on a Pangzhen clean-up run. The side-route bosses Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear (Thunder Spear Phantom Edge), Xie Qiudong, the Divine Healer (the Everflow remedy), You Loong, Leader of the Blackwater Crew (You Loong’s Deluge), and Acolyte Lei Ting (Leiting’s Thunder Mask) round out the roster.
Quick Hand Zhang: Pangzhen’s Merchant
Quick Hand Zhang trades from Zhang’s Hideout, his fixed spot in the city — the interactive map lists him as Pangzhen’s only merchant. His Quick Hand’s Request quest sends you after the treasures of Pangzhen; turn them in at the hideout for his reward chain, which follows you into the Mirage Estate and Meigu Village. The full turn-in list is mapped in our Quick Hand Zhang treasures guide.
Key Items and Collectibles
Pangzhen’s key-item chain (per the interactive map and Game8’s Town of Death walkthrough):
- Huang Manor Key — from Shopkeeper Niu at Myst’s Tavern.
- Lan Manor Key — given through the Young Master Lan storyline.
- Old Man Gen’s Brass Key — tied to the Journey Home questline; report to Gen before you leave for good.
- Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key — opens the Lion Dance Hall depths.
- Backstreet Cellar Crank — hidden in a pot room off the rooftops near the backstreets.
- Mandate Encampment Gate Key — below Gu Wanyue’s well, on a corpse in the puppet room; opens the locked gate back in the eastern Village of Lu.
For completionists: 22 chests, 8 Amber Fragments, 8 Black Stone Fragments, 19 Memory Flowers, 1 Banyan Tree, 1 Scarecrow and 27 books. Two cutoff warnings before you treat the city as done: finish Old Man Gen’s report and Lan Shaodi’s conversation before entering Pangzhen’s deep story beats (both fail across the region line — see the missable quests checklist), and clear the Young Master Lan manor arc while you are in the city.
The Three Exits
- Pangzhen Docks → Meigu Lake. After Flame and Soulclaimer, the Sha-Chi boat waits at the docks. Our Meigu Lake walkthrough covers the boat quest, the three dock bosses and the frozen north.
- Green Serpent House → Mirage Estate. The Serpent Door needs three serpent parts: the Tongue in the Village of Lu’s Black Serpent House, the Fang in the Crimson Forest’s Red Serpent House (both behind Lion-Mane brambles), and the Eye on a Meigu Lake island guarded by Heartpiercer. Walking through is the point of no return that starts the endgame — check the true ending checklist first.
- The northern road. Later story beats push through Pangzhen’s north toward the Mountain of Imprisonment and, ultimately, Mount Soulrend.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bells are in Pangzhen? 27 — the most of any region. The opening Hidden Storehouse bell is story-granted; the rest unlock as you push through the rooftops, market, backstreets, Lion Dance quarter and docks.
Is Pangzhen one region or two on the map? The city south of the manor ridge is one region; the Mirage Estate to its north is a separate region with its own Archive entry, though some interactive maps render both halves on the same canvas.
What weapon should I pick up in Pangzhen before the late game? The Armybreaker (Cavalrybane), Parting Hooks (Soulclaimer) and Wolfjaw Phantom Edge (Wu Xuan) are the standouts — all from main-line bosses you cannot miss.
