What is the main route through Crimson Forest in Phantom Blade Zero?

Who are the Crimson Forest bosses?
How do the Mirrorwood portal puzzles work?
Crimson Forest is Phantom Blade Zero’s second region: a bandit-haunted woodland of outlaw camps, underground passages and poisonous caves that ends in the mist-covered Mirrorwood and the Threadbound Great Tree. The interactive map counts 19 bells, 16 boss encounters and 13 chests here — and one of the game’s harshest fail states: beating Bai Chilian permanently fails five quests at once. This Crimson Forest walkthrough walks the main route and closes with the pre-Bai Chilian checklist.
Pangzhen Bridge to Outlaw Trap: Hua Qianxiao and Jing Ye
Enter from Weeping Creek Valley, activate the first Crimson Forest bell, and follow the main road toward the Pangzhen Bridge Overlook bell — the arena is right there:
- Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic. The region’s opening boss, fought on Pangzhen Bridge. His Bubble Shield is a free punish window; beating him earns The Fanatic’s Broken Blade and the “A Thousand Cups Drained” trophy. Full guide: Hua Qianxiao.
- Trail of Cages and the road on. Lower the cage mechanism to free the prisoner inside — release him to start his questline, or refuse for the Quick Hand Pendant when you next meet him.
- Outlaw Trap bell. The outlaw settlement hub. This is where you accept Honor Among Thieves from the thieves’ network; nearby sits the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank.
- Jing Ye, the Outlaw. The region’s second main boss, encountered down the settlement’s underground passages — he opens the fight on horseback. Full guide: Jing Ye.
Thieves’ Camp and the Healer’s Chain
Cross the wooden bridge to the Thieves’ Camp (its crane-shaped bell is the region’s photo landmark) and start the side-quest sweep here — this is where most of the pre-Bai Chilian checklist lives:
- Talk to Lanlan on the bridge near the camp bell to accept Secrets of the Baishan Sect — after Bai Chilian the offer is gone for good.
- The Nimble Thief’s Blood Letter hand-off for Honor Among Thieves and the Gentle Thief’s questions both happen in this camp.
- Gather the wounded-thief evidence for Festering Secret and the Dungeon Key; the wounded men you treat for Yu’er’s A Healer’s Mercy wait in four spots: two caves near Outlaw Trap, the Cliffside Lodge cellar, and the Thieves’ Camp dungeon itself.
- The tunnel network around Outlaw Trap also holds the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank for Purge the Sect’s Broken-String Bow return.
Mirrorwood: Iron Fever and the Mist
From Cliffside Lodge the route turns supernatural. Descend the ladder at the Mirrorwood Entrance bell:
- Stone Hand Iron Fever. The gatekeeper boss of Mirrorwood, fought in a pit arena — he drops the Iron Gauntlets. Expect two phases and bring guard pressure. Full guide: Stone Hand Iron Fever.
- Burial Grounds and Parting Mists. The poisonous stretch: stay out of the toxic air by repeatedly casting the Hunter’s Chain Sickle to swing tree to tree, and tag the Banyan Tree challenge on the way.
- Mirrorwood Depths portal puzzles. The mist gates progress behind portal-order puzzles — the second area runs Right, Left, then Middle. Grab Inanis’ Memory Flower (6) in the first area and both of Bai Chilian’s Memory Flowers along the final path; the full flower set is in our Crimson Forest Memory Flower guide.
- The final mirror. Listen for weeping and pass through the mirror the sound comes from; repeat for the second mirror to clear the mist and reach the Threadbound Great Tree bell.
Before Bai Chilian: The Checklist
The Threadbound Great Tree bell sits directly outside the final arena. Rest, then verify — per our missable quests checklist, defeating Bai Chilian fails five quests at once and locks out a sixth:
- Flesh Lily — the Twin Flesh Lilies from the Flesh Lily Fields must already be in Yu’er’s hands.
- Purge the Sect — the Broken-String Bow returned to the Brooding Old Archer.
- Festering Secret — all evidence hand-offs done.
- Honor Among Thieves — Blood Letter delivered, questions answered.
- A Healer’s Mercy — all four wounded thieves treated for Yu’er.
- Secrets of the Baishan Sect — at minimum accepted from Lanlan; its Encampment stage completes much later (examine Bi Taotao’s body before beating Yubi).
If the Journal shows any of these in red, reload a save — the game gives you 20 manual slots, and Bai Chilian is the single biggest fail point in the game.
Bai Chilian and the Exit
Rest at the Threadbound Great Tree bell, then enter the arena on the tree in the middle of the lake:
- Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents. A two-phase fight alongside the Illusion of The Chord — if you die in phase 2 you restart at phase 2. Victory awards White Serpent & Crimson Viper, the Resonance Talisman, and the Shieldbreaker-adjacent talisman set; the cutscene carries you to the Place of Awakening bell in the Village of Lu, where the next region begins. Full guide: Bai Chilian.
Come back later with Bastion from Zhuo Bi to open the shield-locked Thieves’ Camp dungeon door, and remember Quick Hand Zhang has a trade spot here if you are working through his request.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bosses are in Crimson Forest? Four main-story fights (Hua Qianxiao, Jing Ye, Stone Hand Iron Fever, Bai Chilian) with 16 boss encounters total on the interactive map, including camp champions and the Banyan Tree challenge.
Is Crimson Forest missable-heavy? It is the missable capital of the early game: five quests fail at Bai Chilian and one more loses its acceptance window. Nothing else in the region is missable — every cave and chest reopens post-game.
What level should I be for Bai Chilian? Launch guides suggest finishing all weapon upgrades and Soul Tempering available by the Threadbound Great Tree bell; her flurries punish under-leveled Sha-Chi gauges, so bank Remnant Dust and temper first.
