FAQ
Is A Severed Mindseal missable in Phantom Blade Zero?
Where do I use the Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank?
How do I reach the Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower?

A Severed Mindseal is Phantom Blade Zero’s longest-running side tale: one quest, three Sha-Chi Towers, three Primal Stones, and a friendly Shadow Warden who keeps moving as the story does. Its eight journal objectives span Weeping Creek Valley, Pangzhen (via the Meigu Lake boat route), and a frozen late-game Crimson Forest, and finishing it awards the Spectral Blade bronze trophy. If you are hunting the platinum, this chain is one of the seven missable trophies — the first hand-in is on a hard timer.
How to Start
Progress through Weeping Creek Valley until you can reach the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Summit Bell. Beside the bell stands the Watchful Shadow Warden, a self-described traitor to his order who is holding back the Mindseal by sheer force of will. He asks Soul to retrieve a Primal Stone hidden inside the tower. Speak to him to accept the tale — the subtitle reads “Flesh forged from clouds, ten-thousand miles along the wind.”
Accept it the moment you find him. Unlike most tales, this one has a region-exit fail trigger attached to its very first objective.
Step 1: Get the Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank
From the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Summit Bell, climb onto the tower roof and drop down the long ladder on the far side. At the bottom waits a Purple-Robed Faceless Spearman — defeat him and he drops the Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank, the key item for every furnace in this questline. Do not leave without it; the crank is used at all three towers.
Step 2: First Primal Stone — Deliver It Before Leaving the Valley
Fast travel to the Valley Sha-Chi Tower 1st Floor Bell, enter the tower, and use the crank on the furnace to open its back compartment. Take the Primal Stone — then pick the crank back up, because you will need it again at the other two towers.
Carry the stone straight back up to the Shadow Warden at the Summit Bell and hand it over. This hand-in is missable. PowerPyx and keengamer both flag it: leave Weeping Creek Valley for Crimson Forest before delivering the first Primal Stone and the tale fails silently, locking you out of the Spectral Blade trophy for the rest of that playthrough. The exact fail trigger is unmapped — PowerPyx’s advice is to hand it in at the earliest opportunity, before you do anything else in the valley. Make a manual save first; the game gives you 20 slots, and this is exactly what they are for.
Step 3: Pangzhen Sha-Chi Tower — the Meigu Lake Boat Route
The second stone waits in the Pangzhen Sha-Chi Tower, but you do not reach it through the city streets. Once your story progress opens Meigu Lake, take the boat route toward the tower’s lower exterior. Fight through to the furnace mechanism on the lower level, use the Furnace Inspection Crank, and claim the second Primal Stone.
The Shadow Warden has relocated too — find him at the tower summit (the quest journal and map pins point to the Meigu Lake side of the tower) and deliver the stone to advance the tale. This leg is not missable, but it is easy to forget amid Pangzhen’s dense side content — the all-tales roster recommends clearing it while you are already on the lake.
Step 4: The Frozen Crimson Forest Tower
The third tower sits in southeastern Crimson Forest, and it is unreachable on your first pass — open water blocks the approach. Once your story progress carries you into Mirage Estate, the season turns: Crimson Forest becomes a snowfield, the water freezes, and the Sha-Chi Tower Gate Bell finally opens.
From the Gate Bell:
- Head left and climb toward the sixth-floor Bell. The Friendly Shadow Warden — now going by Spectral Blade — waits beside it. Speak with him to advance the quest.
- Return to the Gate Bell and take the right-hand route this time. Watch for a drop-down to a lower level that leads to the tower’s base, where the frozen furnace holds the third Primal Stone. Work the mechanism with the crank one last time.
- Climb back to the sixth floor and hand the stone to Spectral Blade. The tale completes and the Spectral Blade bronze trophy pops.
Afterward, the Spectral Blade’s story is not over — he resurfaces in the final region and in cutscenes before the last boss encounters, so completionists should expect to see him again.
Missable Checklist for This Tale
- Hand in the first Primal Stone before leaving Weeping Creek Valley. No exceptions, no “one more collectible first.”
- Never discard the Furnace Inspection Crank. Retrieve it from the furnace every time; without it the later towers cannot be opened.
- The frozen tower requires Mirage Estate progress. If you reach the Crimson Forest tower early and find water in the way, that is not a bug — come back after the season changes. The Crimson Forest walkthrough tracks the before-and-after state of the region.
- Check the trophy guide — Spectral Blade is one of the six missable side-quest trophies standing between you and the platinum.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does A Severed Mindseal have a time limit?
Only its first objective. The Weeping Creek Valley hand-in fails if you exit the region first; everything after that stays open until you complete the chain.
What does the Spectral Blade trophy require?
Simply completing the tale — all three Primal Stones delivered. It is a bronze trophy and one of the seven missables on the road to platinum.
Can I do the whole quest in one region visit?
No. The three towers gate behind story progress: the valley leg first, the Pangzhen leg once Meigu Lake opens, and the Crimson Forest leg only after Mirage Estate freezes the forest.
