This is the index companion to our Soul Tempering mechanics guide: that page explains how the system works — Myst in Pangzhen, a flat 5,000 Remnant Dust per temper, and why tempered abilities beat raw stats. This page answers the other question players actually search: which material does my weapon need, and where do I get it? All 47 launch materials are listed below by weapon, with the multi-fragment items broken out separately. If you are hunting one specific item, jump straight to it via the tables — or start with the single most-asked material of the set, the Baishan Headband.
Baishan Headband: The Full Acquisition Chain
The Baishan Headband tempers the Baishan Stormswords — the wind-and-thunder dual blades dropped by Yubi at the Mandate Encampment Training Grounds — and it is gated behind one of the longest side-tale chains in the game, the Cui quest. The item card tells you why it matters: it belonged to Lu Jieyuan’s wife, a disciple of the Baishan Sect, and he carried it everywhere after her death. GameSpot and Game8 map the chain step by step:
- Meet Cui in the Village of Lu. The tale opens after you defeat Yuzan in the Smuggler’s Tunnel, per Game8 — three generations of her family, “gone with the dawn.”
- Follow the trail to Mount Soulrend. Progress through the Mountain of Imprisonment until you reach the Last Mandate Encampment, the third Bell along the mountain path. In a fenced area you hear a man calling for Cui — her father, Lu Jieyuan, the family’s only survivor. You automatically hand him Cui’s Red Ribbon and Lu Sanqian’s letter, then bury his family beside two fresh graves.
- Fight The Crusher and the Saw. Keep ascending Mount Soulrend to the frozen lake of the Giant’s Lair. During the boss cutscene, Jieyuan appears and throws himself between Soul and the beast to save you — he is gravely wounded (his last line, per PowerPyx’s capture: “Cui… don’t be afraid… Father’s coming to you!”).
- Claim the headband. Once the boss falls, speak to the dying Jieyuan: he gives you the Baishan Headband, ending the questline.
- Temper the swords. Bring the headband plus 5,000 Remnant Dust to Myst (or any Bell) to unlock Unending Storm: Lightning Storm pulls enemies in and builds both the Wind Gauge and Thunder Gauge for each enemy hit — per GameSpot and allthings.how.
Two practical notes. First, the headband’s loot screen appears after the Crusher and the Saw fight, so if you checked Mount Soulrend earlier and found nothing, you stopped one step early — the Cui tale must be progressed first. Second, Unending Storm is what turns the Stormswords’ two-gauge rhythm into a self-sustaining loop: Lightning Storm now feeds both gauges back per enemy caught, so a dense pull can chain straight into the next Baishan’s Blessing window.

(The repaired Illusory Pipa is GameSpot’s 48th documented temper — replacing the Heartrend Pipa via Myst’s repair chain — but it arrives through the parts quest rather than a world material, so it sits outside the 47-item index. The Heartrend Pipa temper line is covered in the mechanics guide.)
Assembled Materials: Check Your Fragments First
Six of the 47 materials are sets, not single pickups — the card in your inventory is assembled automatically once every piece is banked:
- Serpent’s Memory — four Serpent House pieces across four regions.
- Worldbreaker Fist — Fist Fragment: Core + Shell.
- Boy’s Worn Outfit — Cap, Shirt, Shoes, Trousers in the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.
- Restored Ritual Cauldron — three fragments in the Mountain of Imprisonment.
- Chaos Twin Daggers — two Chaos Iron Fragments.
- Flaming Grip — Scorching Flames + Quenched Flaming Grip.
If a source in the tables above points to a fragment, the piece card says so explicitly — so before assuming a material “has no source,” open the material’s detail view and check whether it is still waiting on a piece.
Hunting Rules That Apply to Every Material
- The Dust is flat. 5,000 Remnant Dust per temper, 235,000 for all 47 — bank Dust with the farming routes and treat every temper as a purchase decision.
- Tools gate the map. Four materials hide behind Tiger Cannon walls, several behind Illusory Pipa mist, and the entire Mirage Estate / Mount Soulrend roster only opens in the final chapters — late-game backtracking is the intended path, not an oversight.
- Tales pay in materials. Quest chains like Quick Hand Zhang’s treasures, The Sword and the Way, and Cui are material deliveries wearing a story costume — always finish the tale before leaving a region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same list as the Soul Tempering guide? Yes — the mechanics guide owns the how (unlock, costs, build impact); this index owns the where for all 47 materials, with the Baishan Headband chain written out step by step.
Why can’t I find the Baishan Headband on Mount Soulrend? Because it is not a world pickup — it only exists at the end of the Cui tale, after the Crusher and the Saw fight, when the dying Lu Jieyuan hands it to you. No Cui progress, no headband.
Do tempered effects stack with weapon level upgrades? Yes. Forging (levels 5/10/15/…) and Soul Tempering are independent tracks — a level 30 weapon still gains its full tempered effect on top, which is why tempering your main weapon never becomes wasted spending.
Which temper should I prioritize first? Jagged Steel’s Open Wounds (Iron Butcher Mask) is the community consensus first temper — Bleed-through-block stays relevant all game. After that, temper whatever your build actually uses; a tempered mid-tier weapon out-damages an untempered top-tier one.
