FAQ

How do you start Festering Secret in Phantom Blade Zero?
Walk up to the chain-sealed courtyard beside the Outpost bell in Weeping Creek Valley. Two Ironchain Gate Guards stand in front of it; approach and Soul comments that the chains are hiding something. Press the interact prompt to cut them — the guards object, one runs to tell the captain, and the Festering Secret banner appears.
How do you open the chain-sealed courtyard in Phantom Blade Zero?
You need the Dread Axe Phantom Edge, which drops from Axemaster Peng Meng. Until he falls, the chains will not break. Return to the Outpost courtyard with the axe equipped, smash the chains, and clear the Maskwalkers inside.
Why does Festering Secret matter if it has no item reward?
It is load-bearing for the Four Fierce Axes evidence chain: keengamer's walkthrough routes you through Festering Secret to obtain additional case-file evidence from the Mandate lieutenant. Skip it and the Four Fierce Axes trail — and its Blood Oath Dagger Soul Temper material — stays incomplete.
Is Festering Secret missable in Phantom Blade Zero?
Yes. The tale must be completed before you defeat Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents, in the Crimson Forest. Her defeat changes the Outpost, and Festering Secret can no longer be finished on that save.

What Is Festering Secret?

Festering Secret — in-game subtitle “Some wounds are destined to remain unseen” — is one of the shortest Tales in Phantom Blade Zero. On the clock it is maybe ten minutes: cut some chains, clear a courtyard, deliver two letters. Yet keengamer’s complete 33-Tales walkthrough treats it as infrastructure, not filler, because its evidence chain feeds directly into Four Fierce Axes, whose Blood Oath Dagger is the Soul Temper material for the Dread Axe. It is also the game’s first honest window into how Mandate disciples became Maskwalkers — the reveal the whole plot pivots on later.

One deadline covers everything: complete it before defeating Bai Chilian. Miss it and the quest, its lore, and the evidence it unlocks are all gone until New Game Plus. The mechanics of that cutoff are documented in our missable side quests checklist, and its slot in the regional board is in the all Tales index.

How to Start

The tale begins at the Outpost Courtyard in Weeping Creek Valley — early routing in our Weeping Creek Valley walkthrough. Two Ironchain Gate Guards flank a courtyard sealed in heavy chains, and they will not attack you. Walk toward the barricade and Soul remarks that the chains are hiding something. An interact prompt appears on the chains; press it and a short scene plays where Soul cuts through. The guards object, one bolts to warn the captain, and the Festering Secret banner confirms the tale is active with the objective “Investigate the chain-sealed courtyard at the outpost.”

Objective 1: Break the Chains

Here is the gate most players hit: you cannot cut the chains yet. The courtyard requires the Dread Axe Phantom Edge, which only drops from Axemaster Peng Meng further into the valley. If the interact prompt does nothing, that is the game telling you to progress — the objective “Investigate the chain-sealed courtyard at the outpost” stays pinned in your Tales tab until the axe exists. Come back after the Axemaster falls, smash the chains with the axe, and step inside. Banking the tale early costs nothing, so touch the chains the moment you first see them even if you cannot finish the job yet.

Objective 2: Clear the Courtyard and Take the Orders

The courtyard is occupied by Maskwalkers — the first time the game puts its central horror in front of you this explicitly. Cut through them, then speak with the Swordsman Captain near the Outpost entrance. Hand him the situation and he entrusts you with his written orders, tasking you to deliver them to his lieutenant.

Objective 3: Reach the Lieutenant at the Sha-Chi Tower Outskirts

This leg unlocks after The Hunt falls at the Sha-Chi Tower. From the tower roof, collect the Sha-Chi Tower Base Camp Gate Key, then unlock the gate near the Creek Valley Plains Entrance. Travel toward Long Pillar Overlook and find the blue-robed Mandate lieutenant waiting along the route. Deliver the captain’s orders.

What comes back is the payload: Gu Lingran’s Secret Letter — written evidence of crimes the Mandate would rather keep unseen.

Objectives 4 and 5: Confront the Captain

Fast travel back to the Outpost and show the captain the letter. The final objectives fire in sequence — “Show the captain evidence of Gu Lingran’s crimes,” then “Confront the captain about the suspected Transcension” — and the captain’s reaction lands the tale’s theme: the Maskwalkers in the courtyard were Mandate disciples once, and someone upstairs signed off on what they became. The quest completes on the spot.

Why Ten Minutes Gates an Entire Line

The walkthrough math is why this page exists. Four Fierce Axes asks you to gather case files across three regions and hand the completed evidence to the Child of Insight in Pangzhen — and keengamer’s route explicitly detours through Festering Secret, because the additional evidence comes from the Mandate lieutenant you only meet on this delivery run. The reward at the end of that chain is the Blood Oath Dagger, the Soul Temper material that turns the Dread Axe into its tempered form. In other words: skip Festering Secret, and the axe you used to break these chains never reaches its upgraded state on this save.

So treat the Outpost courtyard like the deadline it is. When you reach the Outpost bell, touch the chains immediately to bank the tale, then let it ride until The Hunt is down. Do not leave the valley with the captain’s orders still in your satchel — they are the only bridge to the lieutenant. And before you ever challenge Bai Chilian, cross-check the missable side quests checklist — one fight wipes out five quests, and this is one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Festering Secret after beating Peng Meng but before The Hunt?

Partially. You can break the chains, clear the courtyard, and collect the captain’s orders immediately after the Dread Axe drops. The lieutenant leg only opens once The Hunt falls and the base camp key is reachable.

Does Festering Secret have a trophy?

No direct trophy — its payoff is the lore reveal and the evidence it feeds into the Four Fierce Axes chain. That chain’s Blood Oath Dagger is the material prize, and it is worth more than most accessory rewards.

What happens to the two gate guards?

Nothing hostile. They object to the chains being cut and one runs to fetch the captain, but they remain non-combatants for the whole tale — a small storytelling touch that underscores the courtyard was an open secret on the base.
